Chapter Fourteen

When Monday came Melinda went to school, like she normally would. She got morning sickness here and there, but she knew that was normal, and let the school nurse know that she was pregnant, so there would be moments that she would be sick. The nurse understood and told her okay. Melinda had gone on with her day like she normally would. When it came to English class Eva would give her a hard time. Because she accused Melinda to stealing Jim from her. Eva had moved to Grandview to try and win Jim back. But he was now engaged to someone else and what she didn't know was they were expecting a baby together. Melinda had been getting annoyed with her little by little. She knew that she was giving her a hard time because of Jim. Amelia and Tom had let Melinda get emancipated. Tom had convinced Beth to do the same thing. She didn't want to but let Melinda do it as well. So that left her free to do what she wanted. She knew that no matter what Jim had her back. She trusted her fiancé more than anything in the world. When the day was over and she went to see, Jim at the station, he knew that he would be worried because of her and the baby. Jim had asked her if she was okay. Melinda told him no that she was not that she was getting sick of her English teacher. All day she gave her a hard time. And if she asked a question about the assignment she ignored her and at the end of the class she told her, that rather she liked it or not that, she was gonna get Jim back. He sighed and told Melinda, that she should know better than that, he is not going anywhere at all, he loves her and their son or daughter, and that is where he belongs. Melinda hugged him and told him that she couldn't, wait until June to be done with school and start her college courses. Jim told her that he knows that she can't. Melinda kissed him and told him that she would see him later when he got home, that she gonna try to make something since he had been teaching her. He told her okay and that he would see her in a few hours, and kissed her. Melinda left to go home. She was making supper when there was a knock at the door. She stopped and went to answer it. At the door was Eva, Melinda asked her what the hell was she doing there. Eva told her, that it was none of her business and that, it was between her and Jim. Melinda told her that Jim was at work, that he was her fiancé now not hers, and that she needed to get that through her dam head and leave her fiancé alone. Eva laughed and told her that, they would see about that. Melinda had finished dinner. But couldn't get what Eva said out of her head. She put the food in the oven to stay warm and was about to leave for the station. When Jim came through the door, called out Mel Honey are you home. Melinda ran to him and held him close. He knew right off something happened. He asked her about what happened and don't lie to him. That something obviously happened. Melinda told him that Eva showed up and that when she did, she told her that she needed to leave him alone and that, they were engaged now. She told Melinda that they will see about that. Jim held her close to him and told her shhh that he was not leaving her. Melinda told him that supper was done and that she didn't know how it came out. But they will see. She made a sheet pan of chicken and broccoli and potatoes. Jim told her that it looked really good. They ate it and both of them liked it. Jim told her that she did a good job at making it. Melinda told him thank you, and that everything but math was done, he knows why it wasn't because Mr Bouche had made it harder than usual. Jim told her that he would help her after they ate. Melinda told him that she was sorry, that it was the only one she could try to make,that the baby would let her make. Jim laughed and said smart baby, already the baby wants to eat healthy. Melinda smiled at him and told him that she guessed so. After supper, they did her homework together. Right after they figured out their monthly bills. While they were watching TV they were thinking about names for the baby. They came up with names for both sexes. Maryann for a girl and Aiden for a boy. Jim told her thank for agreeing to Aiden for the boy since it was his dad's name. Melinda told him that he was welcome and thanked you for agreeing to naming the girl Maryann, after her grandmother. Jim smiled and kissed her and told her that she was welcome. When the movie was over, they went to bed and Jim told her that he was working the same shift that she had school, so they would be home at the same time. Melinda had loved the sound of that. She fell asleep instantly on Jim's chest. Jim held her close to him and fell asleep. Melinda had woken up to Jim's alarm clock and, they both got up and got ready to go, they took a shower together and made love in the shower. Melinda loved it when they did that. Jim had made them breakfast, but the baby didn't like it and got Melinda sick. Jim had given her some saltine crackers and ginger ale to take with her. Melinda had thanked him. Melinda still hasn't told Andrea, Delia, and Charlie yet about the baby. When she got there she told them, guys I have something to tell you. Jim and I are gonna have a baby. They were happy for them. Eva overheard that and, didn't like that Melinda was carrying Jim's baby. She knew now that whatever she had planned for getting Jim back was gonna take a whole lot more now. What she didn't know was that Melinda had told Jim everything that she told her. Since they promised each other no secrets. And they don't have none with each other. They tell each other everything anyway. Jim was getting the funny feeling that he, always got when something was, going on with Melinda. But he didn't know what it was. What bothered him the most was, that he couldn't call her and ask her if she was okay. Because she was in school. But he knew when she had lunch. He asked his boss if he could take his lunch now. And the reason why, is that he just has a feeling something is wrong with his fiancée. His chief told him to go ahead. When Jim got there for lunch Melinda was eating a salad. While the others had what was on the menu. Melinda had hugged Jim when she saw him. He asked her if she was okay, that he got a feeling something was wrong. Melinda told him that she was fine, just her stomach being off because of the baby. She then whispered I saw you know what in the bathroom. But I can't do anything here. He whispered when you find out who they are, I will see about getting a report for you okay. Mean time do me a favor and stay relaxed no matter what, for me and our daughter or son. Melinda smiled and kisses him and tells him that she will. Jim held her close to him for a while. You and our baby are my world Mel, don't ever doubt that. Melinda told him that she won't. They gave each other a long passionate kiss. Eva didn't like that when she saw that. Jim and Melinda told each other they loved one another. Jim asked Andrea, Delia, and Charlie to watch out for Melinda and try to keep her, as calm as possible for the baby. They told him that they would do their best. Jim left to go and get something to eat for himself. Now that Eva had seen that he was a paramedic she, came up with an idea to get him back. Or so she thought that it would anyway. When the day was over and Melinda had gotten home. Jim had just gotten home as well. Melinda smiled at him and did her homework while he made supper. Which was Shepheard's pie potato skins. Melinda told him that it looked good, Jim told her that it is, his dad use to make, it at times when he was growing up. Melinda smiled she loved it when he made things that he, ate when he was growing up. Because it meant that the baby, will let her keep it down. Jim had smiled at her and was a bit surprised when she wanted more. He gave her more and told her that, the baby must like it, if she wanted more of it. Melinda had agreed with him on that. They knew what they had to feed Melinda from here on out. When Melinda was finishing up her homework. Jim was putting away some of the leftovers and packed some for lunch for Melinda. He also put in the lunch box, some saltine crackers, and made sure that there was ginger ale. The next day was Friday, Jim had handed Melinda the lunch box, and told her that it was last night's supper. Melinda smiled because she knew why he did it. Jim kissed her bye and he went to work, Melinda had told Andrea and Delia about how the baby, is like Jim right now so far, that he or she, likes healthy food or Irish food like he does. They told her well from now on, until he or she is born, then you have to think like Jim when it comes to eating. Melinda laughed and told them I know, I hope this baby is like his or her father. not like me. I don't want the baby to grow up like I did with it all. I had a grandmother for support. And this baby will have me and Jim. We're not gonna do what my mom did to me, at least I won't. I know Jim will be like my dad, and be supportive about it, like he is with me. He didn't doubt me when I told him, my secret at all just asked questions, and that was all he did. I always hoped that I would find someone that did that. Yet here is Jim the one who does. I keep asking myself how did I get lucky in finding him. He thinks something but I can't say anything here, since it has to do with my little secret that, only you ladies know, that Jim and Charlie knows. We can't let anyone else know about that secret. Eva was listening and was curious about what this secret was. But she didn't care much about that. Her main goal was trying to get Jim back. She had called Faith since she stayed in touch with her. Told her that Jim was engaged to Melinda and they were having a baby. Faith didn't like that much. Even though she told Jim that she would give Melinda a chance, that didn't mean that she was ready, for him to have a baby, especially, not with her right now, since she was still young. It worried Faith that Jim would get into trouble for it. She told Eva that she would call Jim and see, what is going on and why so suddenly. Eva told Faith okay that she thought she should know. Faith called Jim but she had gotten his voicemail because he was at work and on a call. At the end of the day, Melinda had returned home and made something for dinner, lucky for her the baby had let her make it. Jim came home and was on the phone with someone. Melinda couldn't hear who it was at first. Then she heard him say how did you find out about the engagement and the baby mom. We didn't say anything because we knew how you felt about us being together, as I told you before mom, I love Melinda nothing you or anyone can say or do to change that. When Faith told Jim that she heard it from Eva, he got pissed, and snapped at him, YOU ARE SERIOUSLY STILL IN TOUCHED WITH THAT SLUT, MOM REALLY, SHE TOLD YOU THIS HOPING TO START ANYTHING IT WON'T. DON'T EVER CALL WITH SOMETHING THAT CHEATING SLUT HAS TO SAY, BECAUSE I DON'T WANT TO HEAR IT, AND I DON'T HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH HER. Jim hung up, and after he did he noticed that Melinda was in tears. He pulled her close to him. Baby don't cry, this doesn't change anything. Yeah, my mom and I are the only ones, in the Clancy family for now, but that doesn't mean that I am gonna do what she wants. I am 24 years old, and yes my fiancee is gonna be 18, but we have your father's permission, he is your soul guardian, and he is okay with us being together, the engagement, and everything. So we are okay. Melinda calmed down in his arms, and told him that she only had math and English, he told her to go, ahead and do it, he would finish dinner. Jim finished up dinner for her, while she did up her homework, except for 3 questions on math. After supper was done, Jim helped her with those problems. They watched a movie together, Jim didn't mind the chick flicks, so much anymore, maybe it was because of everything that he saw on the job now or not. Melinda had fallen asleep on his lap. Jim carefully picked her up and set her on the bed. While she was sleeping he went to clean up the dishes and, clean up the house a bit. He didn't want Melinda to do too much because of the baby. Melinda had woken up just as Jim had come in taking off his paramedic shirt. Melinda smiled at him, while she was watching, him get undressed for bed. Jim seen her watching and asked her if she sees something she likes. Melinda told him I see something I love and want. Jim got on the bed and kissed her and got on pajama bottoms, while Melinda got up to use the bathroom. She came back out and got dressed for bed. Jim pulled her to him and gently kissed her neck. Told her that she was beautiful and that he was glad that he was marrying her and that they were gonna be having a baby together. Melinda kissed him and told him that she was too. Melinda had put on a pair of pajamas that were shorts and a tang top. The baby was giving her hot flashes at times, and so did her nightmares, so she figured this would be the best, she hadn't seen that ghost since that day. But that night she had a night terror. She shot up from her sleep, sweating and breathing heavily. Jim woke up and rubbed her back, it is okay baby your safe, I am here and I won't let anything happen to you, I promise. He held her close to him. This was the only part that Jim hated, and he didn't know what else to say, he knew he couldn't see the ghost as she did, he didn't have these visions, like she did and he didn't know much of what that was like. But what he did know was that he was gonna be, there for her the best he could, to comfort her and make her feel safe as possible. At times like this, he wished that he could be able to help more. But what mattered to Melinda was that he was there to comfort her, when she woke up like that. Once he had her calmed down, Jim went to get a cold cloth and patted her down with it. So she wouldn't be sweating so much anymore. He didn't like when they did this to her. But he had been with her long enough to, know that it was always gonna be like this. He wanted to be with her, for the rest of his life, then he had to deal with this too. He promised her that he would. Melinda had told Jim that she was gonna get some water, he asked if she wanted him to go with her. He never liked leaving her alone after her nightmares/visions/ or night terror, whatever they were called. Melinda told him that she would be okay if she needed him she will call him. Jim laid there in bed, he also learned that Melinda had turned a bit distant after every one of them. He knew that it was because she didn't know how to explain how she was feeling. When Melinda got a drink of water, she thought about the vision she had. She always hated when the visions would make her relive the last moments of the ghost lives. While she was lost in thought, Jim had come out of the room, and held her, making her jump for a moment. When she realized it was just Jim she relaxed. Jim told her that he didn't mean to scare her at all. She told Jim about what happened in the vision, and that she wasn't sure why she, always ended up reliving the last moments of their lives. She never did understand that part, It looked like the car was a 1994 Chevy, she couldn't tell him anything else. Jim told her its okay Mel, okay I will look tomorrow for, any accident reports like that at work. Let's get you back to bed, you need your rest. Melinda loved so much how understanding Jim was, and how he cared about her health and always wanted what was best for her, like she did for him. Jim held her as close to him as he could, without hurting her or the baby, he just wanted her to know that she was safe. When his alarm went off for work, Melinda got up with him, so that she could be with him for a while before he left for work. They spent the morning picking on each other. Before he had to leave for work. He told her he will call her with the results or have it in his bag, That they got this together no matter what. Melinda had always loved that with him. He was there for her and helped her so much, the best that he could. Now that he was a paramedic he had connections that no one else had. That was the one thing that she needed, while he was at work she was on the computer, trying to find things out herself, she did not see the woman standing there, Melinda jumped and told the ghost that she scared her. The woman told her that she was sorry that her name, was Miranda and that she needed Melinda's help. Melinda told her I can help you, you need to tell me what happened first so I can help, does she remember what happened? Miranda told her that she remembered running out the door, that she was crying, and that she crashed but that was all that she could remember. Melinda told her okay that is good, that she remembers some, that it could help her with the research so that she can help her go into the light. Melinda called Jim to let him know. Jim answered hey honey I found something about that accident. Melinda told him that she knew some of it, that she was crying, and that she crashed. Jim told her that is right she did, and I know how you know about that, here is what I found, according to the report that I found, she had caught her boyfriend and friend talking about how they had to keep a secret from her, and she ran out the door, got in her car crying and she couldn't see because of the tears and crashed into a tree, her car folded like an accordion and killed her instantly she was only 25 years old, according to her best friend and boyfriend, they were planning a surprise party for her, they didn't know that she heard them and that she thought the worst. Melinda told him that explains why, she remembers running out the door and crashing. Do you have an address for the boyfriend? Jim gave her the last known address. Melinda went there and hoped for the best, a woman answered and asked if she could help her. This was always the hardest part for Melinda. Melinda had told the woman that she needed to speak to Greg. The woman told her that she was Greg's girlfriend what was this about, when he came to the door? Melinda asked if they could talk for a moment. He told her sure come in, Melinda told him that it may sound crazy, but she saw the ghost of Miranda. Greg asked her if she was sure about that. Melinda told him that she was, and that she was standing next to him, and wants to know who the girl was. Greg told them that she is his girlfriend now, she was there for him, after Miranda had died. Melinda had told him that Miranda wanted to know why he was keeping from her that he was seeing her best friend behind her back. Greg told her what is that what she thought that night, no it wasn't like that. Her birthday was the following week, we were planning a party for her, her mother had just died the month before, she was feeling down and we thought that it might be something that would cheer her up. Since we knew her better than anyone else did. We thought we would plan it together, but I would never have done that to her, in fact, that night on her birthday I was gonna ask her to marry me. I never meant to make her think that at all. Miranda told Melinda to tell him that she believed him, that she was sorry that she thought that, she was just so confused and that she didn't know what else to do. Melinda told him what she said. Greg told her that she has nothing to be sorry for, he just wants her to know that he still and always will love her. Miranda had Melinda tell him that she would too, and asked if the light was for her, Melinda told her that it was, that only she could see it. Miranda had seen her mom and said I'm coming, mom. Miranda went into the light. Greg told Melinda thank you for letting him know that. That he always believed there was a afterlife, and mediums out there, just never met one. Melinda told him Greg well thank you for believing me. I have had some people that thinks she was a fraud. He laughed and told her, hard to do that when I felt her next to me. That is where you were looking. Melinda smiled and told him that she hopes he has a nice life. He told Melinda that he would. He hopes the same thing for her. Melinda left to go home when she was at home, she couldn't help but think about Jim, and that she had to thank him. While she was putting a lunch together for them. For a nice romantic picnic at the park. Eva had gone to the station, Jim had seen her and asked her what was she doing there, she needed to leave now. He has nothing to do with her. Jim walked out of the station and into the bay. Eva followed him and told him that, she never meant to cheat on him, that they were just shooting for a photoshoot and that it just happened. Jim told her that it didn't matter what happened, the point is that it did, and she didn't stop to think about how it would ruin them. Eva told Jim that it was a mistake, that she wanted him back, that they could make it work this time, and that she knew that it could. Jim told her no it won't, because he loves Melinda and that he is going to marry her someday, that they are already engaged. Eva told him that she knows that he still loves her and that he is not that serious with a little girl, that has a secret that she is hiding from the world. Jim told her first of all I know about that secret, second of all Melinda is more of a woman than any woman I ever met, she is reliable, faithful, loving, and caring person he has ever known. That he can't wait to marry her. Eva tells Jim that he is crazy if he thought that she was serious because she was a little girl, and that it would only be a matter of time before Melinda wanted someone her age. Jim told her that she was wrong, that she didn't know Melinda like he does. Eva told him that she knew him though, that he wanted someone close to his age, soon or later. Jim tells her that she don't know him at all, that he loves Melinda, and that he can't wait to marry her and see what their baby is. That she needs to leave the station and leave him alone. Eva got closer to Jim and he backed up and told her to stop it. That whatever she thinks she is gonna do. She better not even do it because he is an engaged man. Eva told him that they were too at one point, and he broke her heart. Jim told that was bullshit, she broke his by sleeping with her photographer, and  he walked in on them doing it, which is why he called off the wedding. He doesn't want a hoe for a wife, he wants someone who is gonna be there for him, who is gonna support him in what he wants in life, that Melinda and him do that for each other. Eva told him whatever Jim, but come on she is a kid, you want a kid for a housewife, and mother of your child. Jim told Eva at least it is better than, trying to turn a hoe into a housewife wife. Eva slapped him across the face. What neither of them knew was that Melinda heard everything and seen everything. She was upset that Jim had some what called her a kid. Melinda had got in her jeep in tears, and drove off home. Melinda was packing her stuff in tears, when she felt a sharp pain in her stomach. She knew she wouldn't make it to the hospital, with the pain she was in. So Melinda called 911 and told them the address and that she thought she was having a miscarriage. When Jim heard his address he got in the ambulance and almost left Bobbie behind. He rushed there sirens and horn blaring. When he got there. He rushed inside, screaming Melinda's name. Melinda told him in the bathroom. Jim went in and there was blood pouring out. He picked her up and carried her out to the stretcher. Bobbie and Jim had got her in the ambulance and Bobbie drove them to the hospital while Jim sat in the back with Melinda telling her to stay with him and not leave him. Melinda told him what about the baby. Jim told her they will find out soon. They got to the hospital and they rushed her to the maternity ward and found out that she had miscarried the baby. They got Melinda to stop bleeding. She cried for her baby, and so did Jim, he held Melinda and asked her why it looked like she was crying. Melinda told him that it didn't matter, and thanked him for being there, but she thinks they should call it over. Jim asked her why, with more tears in his eyes, not just because he had just lost their baby, but now she wanted it to be over. Melinda told him that she heard what he and Eva said, about her being a kid. Jim told her Mel I didn't mean it like that, she was calling her it, not him. Melinda told him, I heard you say yeah well it's better than, trying to turn a hoe into a housewife. Jim begged her not to leave him, that he loved her and that he wouldn't be able to survive without her. Melinda told him that she feels the same way as he does. Jim told her then don't leave me, Mel. Eva just wants us to break up, because she thinks she has a chance of getting me back, and she doesn't. I rather be with someone who loves me, not just my money that he makes, or wants him when it is convenient for them, that they get each other, when no one else does get them. That is what made them fall in love with each other in the first place. Melinda told him that he had a point there, that it was the reason that they fell in love with each other. He knew right off from the start that something was wrong with her, that no one had ever been able to do that since her grandmother. Jim told her so why should we let that go, Mel, just because an ex wants to ruin that, because they are jealous because they never had what we do. Now that won't make any sense now would it Mel? Melinda left and told him no it wouldn't at all, and that she was glad that they found each other. Jim told her that he was glad that they did as well. They shared a kiss and told each other that they loved each other. The doctor told her that she could go home, but rest for at least 2 days, Jim told her that he would call her out of school, so you could have rest. Melinda nodded her head, and she told Jim that she had no clothes. He told her that he would have, Bobbie take him to the house to get some for her. Melinda told him okay. Bobbie was out in the waiting room, and asked Jim if she was going home, Jim told him that she was, but he needed to go get some clean clothes. Bobbie took Jim to his place and he got Melinda clean clothes. He started to cry once again when he saw her stuff packed. Jim wiped away his tears and left to go back to the hospital. Jim got there and asked about going back there with Melinda and he brought her clothes. They let him back to the room, he asked if she was thinking about leaving him, and he saw her stuff was packed, or half of it was. Melinda told him that she was thinking about it. That is when she felt the pain in her stomach. Jim held her close to him. Melinda told Jim that she was not going to, go anywhere now that she loved him. This will only make them stronger together. Jim told her that she was right about that, and he wouldn't want it any other way, because she was the only love of his life. Melinda told him that he was hers. Melinda got dressed to go home. Jim told her that Bobbie brought him home to get her stuff, and that he is waiting for them. They have to back to the station to get the truck. Melinda asked about going with him. Jim told her of course she could go with him. When they came out, Bobbie brought them to the station and Jim had opened the door for Melinda, making her smile at him. Jim kissed her before heading over to the driver's side. He got in and headed home. Once they got home they unpacked her stuff that she had packed up. Told each other they loved each other. They talked about what happened that night so that they could work through it. When they went to bed that night Jim, stayed awake a bit, just to hold Melinda, he thought about her and their baby, the possibility of losing her, and the fact he almost did something completely stupid. But he also knew that she was right, this would only bring them closer together. Jim loved Melinda with all of his heart, he knew that she loved him with all of hers. Together they can do anything, as long as they are together and talk about things no matter what it is. That was what they had promised each other when they had first gotten together. And when they had first started to talk. That there were gonna be no secrets, and that they would talk things out, stay together on things, and they will listen to both sides before they made any decisions. He is glad that they did, make that promise, because that is what had saved them tonight. They worked out together for that reason and the fact that they loved each other with all their hearts. Jim finally fell asleep, when Melinda woke up to use the bathroom. She cried some and then went back to bed. She held Jim close with her head on his chest. Jim wrapped his arms around her and they stayed asleep together that way. When they woke up, Jim had called her out, and had the note from the hospital, he told Melinda that he would drop it off, and be right back home. That he was gonna stay home and take care of her. Melinda loved that she had someone that wanted to take care of her. Not because they had to, but because they wanted to. Jim was her one and only, and she was his, She loved that most about him. She knew that was what he loved most about her. They loved each other and wanted to be there for each other, no matter what, they would always be there for each other. When Jim got home from school, he made Melinda go rest, and he weighed on her hands and feet, Melinda told him that he didn't have to do this. Jim told her that he wanted to because he loves her. As far as he is concerned she is already his wife. Melinda had told him that she felt like he was already her husband. They shared a kiss and watched a movie together when the phone rang, Jim answered Clancy, no I am sorry, I can't my wife needs me. I would like today and tomorrow off if possible. The chief told him that it was and that he understood, Bobbie had told him what happened, and that he was just calling to give his condolences. Jim told him thank you, we both appreciate it. He hung up and told Melinda what the chief had said, she told Jim that was sweet of him to do. They held each other during a movie and fell asleep on the couch together.
