The New Girl (Fairy Tail Fanfic):
Chapter 12: Destination Date

Elaine's POV —

The wooden cart squeaks as I push it over the bridge that connects the Armory to the Archive section of the Guild's library.

Lacrima lights illuminate my way down the staircase as I take a path so familiar that I could walk it with my eyes shut. The scent of earth and stone fills my lungs the deeper I descend.

I nod to Romeo at the entrance and he jumps out of his seat, hurrying to open the door as I approach.

"Good morning Elaine!" he says, holding the entrance open so I can pass. Romeo wasn't someone I considered to be a bookworm, but I guessed he was working here from his father's orders as a chore.

"Good morning Romeo." I offer him a smile as I push the cart through. As chores go, I've scored my favorite. "I can take it from here." Romeo nodded excitedly, relieved from his duties, and left the library in haste.

Rows of twenty-foot-high shelves run the length of the cavernous structure, and I soak in the sight as I wait by the table nearest the entrance. The library smelled like parchment, book-binding glue, and ink. They smell like home.

When the library door opened again, it brought me a smile to my lips as Lucy enters the library and brings her gaze to meet mine. I full-on grin and sigh from relief, "Lucy!"

Lucy's bright eyes sparkle, but she looked more surprised than happy to see me, "Elaine? What are you doing here?"

I pointed at the stack of books I had with me, "I asked Master if he needed an extra hand with things while Mira and Cana are gone."

Lucy nodded, "Not sure what to do with your time away from dear ole Kaname?" Her eyebrows wiggle a little after asking.

Lucy wasn't wrong, Kaname and I had been catching up this past week, but it had been a few days since he left to finish some business.

"What are you doing down here?" I asked Lucy, not wanting to get into our affairs.

Lucy grinned, "I'm looking for a novel." She said in a giddy manner. She hugged the plain, auburn book she held so dearly.

"I can help you find it-."

"No!" Lucy practically yelped but she cleared her throat, "I-I mean I know where it is." She said more calmly.

Holding a plain book cover and blushing?

"If you say so." I glanced a skeptical look at her, not cause I was judging her, but I was somewhat relieved I wasn't the only one. Though, I couldn't help but tease her a little bit about it when I saw she was heading towards the Navigation section, "The Romance section is down that way."

Lucy halts from where she stood, jolted even, but kept on walking with her back faced to me.

Leaving her be, I made my way down the Archive section of the library. Just as Master pointed out, these books needed some serious organizing. From what I heard, the library was a new addition to the Guild, highly requested at that, but Master thought it would be a good idea to keep an assortment of literature regarding their history. Especially after being gone for seven years, Master wanted to leave something behind for the town of Magnolia.
