The New Girl (Fairy Tail fanfic):
Chapter 4: Whispering Past

Elaine's POV—

"Do you mind if I can ask some questions?" I tried to keep up with Gray, who clearly walked in front of me from impatience. "How did you guys find me earlier?"

Gray didn't turn around, forcing me to stare at his back.

Well, I shouldn't complain from what I was seeing, but I also knew it was more respectful to face the person you're talking to.

Gray didn't turn to see me and said, "Natsu has a strong nose and was able to follow your scent."

I resisted the urge to sniff my armpits and moved on to my next question, "What did you mean by everyone having good news? What did you find out about my parents?"

"We'll find out soon." Gray said simply.

I gave up and tried occupying the rest of the time observing my surroundings. During these odd hours, Magnolia really was like a sleepy beachside town. When the Mages were asleep, it sort of became a place where nothing ever happened. The quiet was familiar, but I was never near a large body of water before and wanted to walk along the shore, the beach looked deserted when we passed by it. I wished one day I could walk as far as the pier to look at the boats moored there. They were so brightly painted they looked like they belonged in a picture book.

I reminded myself to not think about such silly things. I realized I thought too much about how amazing this place was.

I know I said it before, but this place really was different from home. It is...not easy to describe. Try to imagine an expanse of white, an invisible city. Ceilings like liquid gold and rose quartz, a feeling of buoyancy, of weightlessness, seemingly empty but more majestic than the grandest palace on earth. At least that's how it used to feel.

I've only known home, but mist and fog often shrouded the grounds, shielding us from the outside world. A place of perfection with the cost of absolute isolation.

But, I have a good home. I have everything I needed, more than most people I'm sure. I have no reason to....to wish...

I shook my head so I wouldn't finish that thought. Our moments walking through the town had been anything but hospitable.

Gray was giving a cold shoulder still. I knew he was a wizard who could use Ice Magic, but he was being real cold.

"Did I annoy you in some way?" I asked next.

Gray groans, "I just don't have all the answers to your questions, alright?"

"Noted. Shut your mouth Elaine." But I still frowned.

"You guys!" Behind us, Natsu was sprinting as he approached us. I guessed he must have been looking for us. "You're alright!" Natsu seemed concerned but he smiled, his canine teeth visible.

Gray crossed his arm across his chest, "At least I found her."

"Well I'm not some kind of prize!" I almost said that aloud.

"Well at least I was here in case you didn't!" Natsu said, in a less friendly tone.

Another scoff from Gray, "As if you would do anything."

"Whatever, Grumpy Face." Natsu verbally mocks him.

I noticed Gray's heavy gaze on me. Always unrelentingly simple but somehow not plain. There was something going on within that hard exterior but it was difficult to crack.

I've never met someone so efficiently irksome. I glared at him as his gaze curiously flitted around mine. "Are you always grumpy?" I spat.

"Are you always grumpy?" I spat
