“Young Master Hemmawich really is…”
“Just call him Sailub.” Chod interrupted Belle and glanced at her through the mirror. “We are all relatives. You are still his elder in terms of generation. If you talk like this, people will laugh.”
Belle frowned when she heard the word “elder”, she sighed and changed her words, “Did Sailub really say that everything was good with Pon?”
Chod tidied up her hair and nodded. “Yes, I’d asked him if Pon had caused any trouble or if he was mischievous… He said he wasn’t.”
Belle sneered, “Could you take what he said seriously? He might just be polite.”
“Not necessarily.” Chod put her comb down and said, “I asked a little bit about their matters and Sailub replied with quite a few details. If they hadn’t spent much time together, he wouldn’t have known that much. From what he said, they were together every day. I’ve also heard that Sailub recently broke off contact with those people from before. In this month, if there wasn’t a need for socialising, he would never go outside nor bring Pon out. Outsiders even said that he had changed his sexual preference and was infatuated with Pon.”
Belle scoffed at her mother’s reply and said, “Who hasn’t done things on impulse before? Didn’t you just say that he never took Pon out? How would others know whether their relationship was good or not? What the reality is, only they themselves know.”
“Yes, things behind closed doors are their issues.” Chod glanced at Belle, her words full of hidden meaning and continued, “There is no need for outsiders to worry about it.”
Belle thought about what had happened during the birthday party, flushed, and responded stiffly, “Who is willing to worry about it? I heard that Pon had changed schools?”
“Yes, Sailub helped him complete the procedures and he is studying in Mae Fah Luang.”
Chod changed from her smart attire to a rarely worn ink-colored cheongsam.
She took a long time to decide and finally chose a pearl necklace whose beads were neither too big nor too small.
Upon wearing it and having a closer inspection in the mirror, she continued, “At first, I didn’t believe what Sammy said. They were… love at first sight. Ha! Someone like Sailub who had seen the world and is experienced. And she say that he couldn’t help himself when he saw her son? Who is she kidding?”
Belle insisted, “That’s right! How is it possible…”
“But I believe it now.” Chod interrupted coldly, “These days, Sailub has been very concerned about Pon. Whether he was fascinated by Pon at the heat of the moment or truthfully really likes him, Pon now has significant weight in his heart. Because of this, you have to treat Pon better… At least show it to outsiders that your relationship is good.”
Belle didn't answer but instead made a face.
“I don’t care if you’re happy or not. Later on, you have to pretend to be happy and you must treat Pon politely.”
A trace of annoyance flashed between Belle’s eyes, knitting her brows she replied, “Can’t I say that I have something on? Or that I am unwell today… and have gone out to get some fresh air.”
Belle got up, but before she could go outside, Chod angrily shouted, “Stop!”
“I’m reluctant to smile at him, can’t I?” Belle was exasperated, “You know I won’t pretend to be happy…”
“Then learn.” Chod completely let herself go. “In a while, not only will the two of them come over, but your sister-in-law and the relatives that are close to us will also come. I have to let them know that our family has always been harmonious!”
