Singapore Grand Prix - part 2
"You blackmailed me, haven't you? Let me go now, I have to find Lando", I was about to open the door but he didn't move a centimeter. I needed a moment to really understand that he holds me hostage now because it seemed too unreal.
"Don't you want to know why I did it?", he sounded so calm as if this whole situation couldn't bother him any less.
"I would appreciate it more if you would let me go now but that's apparently not an option. So tell me why did you do such a thing? Not just to me but also to one of your best friends", I tried to sound as confident as possible but to be honest it freaked me out seeing the person who send me these awful threats standing right in front of me.
"You think I don't know about the rumours of Lewis signing with Ferrari. Mate, I need a seat after next year.", he said a bit desperate, stepping towards me and away from the door. I decided to talk to him, distract him and eventually I'll move past him and out of his room.
"First of all, don't call me mate ever again. Second of all, what has that to do with anything?" He just confused me even more than explain anything.
"You aren't the smartest, no? I want your seat." Now he grinned in an evil manner and left me completely speechless. How? Why?
He must have seen those questions written on my face, "Come on, I saw the potential of McLaren and I wished I saw it three years ago instead of moving to a team which betrays me now. I don't know if you watched the podium ceremony but Fred was even more happy seeing Lewis there than seeing me. Fortunately, I still have contact to some guys of my former team at McLaren. Some of them are now part of your team. Apperently they missed me because they couldn't be happier when I told them about my plan to get you fired. They were also eager to help me."
He sounded equally bitter about Ferrari and proud of his plan and the loyalty of his old team. The latter disgusted me because I thought I had a good relationship to my team. They welcomed me to my first formula one season and I believed the work we put in together was decent but apperently they had other ideas in mind from the start. Still, the dots to the blackmailing didn't connect.
"What plan? Me and Lando breaking up certainly won't get you my seat?"
"It won't? You say you haven't thought about switching teams when Lando made mean comments about you on a daily basis?", he paused and I remembered having exactly this thought. I was also shocked that he knew about Lando and me fighting but my team of dirty frauds must have told him every little detail.
"The thing is that wasn't the plan in the first place. The plan was to let you perform poorly which would have been pretty easy with the three engineers in your team doing whatever I say and having free access to your car. But it didn't really show because McLaren was generally shit in the first couple races. Then it was time for updates and those engineers went to Zak to tell him only Lando should get them because you aren't ready yet, still struggling with the settings that were already installed ..." He trailed off, probably thinking about his masterplan.
I can't believe people working in a professional sport would do such a thing but I guess in the end it's always the personal interests that influence everything.
"And then? I did get better eventually. Remember Silverstone? Which place did you finish - P10?" I don't know if being this sassy was clever but I couldn't help it seeing his dumb face in front of me which says all those disturbing things.
"Ha, would you also tell me in which place I finished today? And who stood by my side? Not you for sure. You finished behind Lando all season long. Even when the engineers didn't manipulate your performance like in Silverstone and Hungary you were still behind. Because you don't belong in this team or here at all."
