Dean drove the lonely highway in silence, having been sent on a small mission to their informants house for something Bobby needed. He wasn't paying much attention when Bobby was talking, his mind distracted and fogged by questions that had been abuzz in his mind since he'd found out who the informant truly was. Old feelings stirred in him, spiking when he'd stopped by their house to pick the items up. He now was driving back to Bobby's, their interactions playing over in his mind. Finding that the informant had been a childhood friend of his and Sam's, mostly his, had sent him for a loop. The brothers had thought them dead after a monster attacked them and their family, resulting in their parents death. They had pulled through, just barely though, thanks to the interference of John Winchester and his sons. When Dean went to go visit them in the hospital days after the incident, they were gone. With no news and no doctors willing to tell him anything, he assumed they had died. He grieved for so long he had begun to lose sight of what really mattered, in his fathers words. In reality, ___ had been sent to live with distant family where they grew up.
After that night, ___ had fixated on the idea of monsters being real, researching all they could find and being led to Bobby eventually. They had attached to him, finding him to be good company in the long nights. They often ended up staying with him for weeks at a time just trying to absorb all the knowledge they could from him. When they couldn't learn more from him on any certain subjects, they'd spend days at the library reading and taking notes and silently correcting the stupid authors who clearly weren't as passionate about their craft as ___ was. In their time, they had become quite the well of knowledge, rivalling even the most experienced hunters. Bobby even deferred to them a few times without the boys knowing.
Though they were knowledgeable, they weren't all that much for the field, they were more of the guy behind the desk. When another apocalyptic ancient creature reared its ugly head with no tested lore on it, Bobby finally gave the boys a direct line to ___. If they didn't know, no one did. The three didn't make the connection that they knew each other quickly, only connecting the dots after the monster was slain and another major disaster avoided. ___ had said something that, in tandem, set off a memory in the brothers who pieced it together before interrogating ___ on where they had been all these years.
They had celebrated the victory over the ugly and their rekindled friendship with burgers and beer, ___ opting for a milkshake. Dean gave them an odd look for it, only getting a shrug and a flip of the bird with he made a quip about them not growing up much since they'd last seen each other. It earned a chuckle from Sam and a smirk from Bobby.
These small memories played over and over in his thoughts as he drover further and further from them. It was confounding to find himself so worked up over some kid he'd found when they were so young. The fact that they'd crossed paths once again and in such a manner, it seemed impossible, and yet here they were. He sighed, running a hand down his face before returning his eyes to the road. A quick glance out of the driver side window and a static filled radio station stirred frustration in his already complicated mess of a heart. He slammed the radio off, leaving him in almost complete silence until the soft pitter patter of rain sounded off his windshield.
He glanced up at the dark sky, seeing it was late he didn't notice the storm clouds above. Within a second, it went from a slight drizzle to a downpour. Dean cursed, hating the idea of having to drive all the way back to Bobby's from where ___ had set up shop. Realistically, it wasn't that long of a drive, but Dean had a feeling his thoughts would drag it out as long as they could. Just then the idea to turn back and wait out the storm with ___ crossed his mind, sending a twinge of pink to his ears. That wasn't like him, he never blushed.
