Kyla Foster
"Don't mind that you were shopping alone?" I asked Madison. The two of us sit at the bar drinking cocktails while Ryker and Marcus play frisbee on the beach.
"Oh no. I'm better off alone anyway. Anyway, it took me more than an hour to choose what I liked..."
I nod my head, happy that she is not angry. As much as Madison is surrounded by friends, she likes to spend time alone. She got used to it after her mom died.
"What are the plans for the wedding?"
I regret asking this as Madison's expression changes. He purses his lips and snorts at that.
"I guess in the middle of July."
So soon. It is now the middle of June.
"What are you going to wear?"
"I won't reveal yet. I just have an idea. To overshadow Deanna there."
I try not to roll my eyes at this. Madison hates Deanna so much, for no reason. It's not her fault her dad chose her. She is dear to me and he treats her nicely.
"And you?"
"I haven't thought about it yet..." I admit, because lately her dad's wedding has been the last thing on my mind.
"Well, you better think about it. That day will come soon."
I stare at the blue color of the ocean. Hell, I want to take a bath now, but I didn't bring a bathing suit. Then Ryker appears on my horizon. She is shirtless and running after the Frisbee thrown by Marcus across the street.
I can't help but notice his muscles and plates on his stomach. He mentioned that he works out and goes to the gym, but I had no idea he looked this good.
Madison notices my look and laughs, wickedly.
"You know, Kyla, I can't blame the girls for looking at him all the time. He's really handsome."
"Well, it is," I admit, trying to sound nonchalant.
"But that's just the outside."
"Oh, don't tell me you're not attracted to her," she answered with a raised eyebrow.
I feel myself blush and quickly try to change the subject.
"I pray? I didn't say that. I just think it matters what someone is like on the inside."
"I know, I'm joking. Sometimes you're so serious Ky..."-Madison laughed and took a sip of her cocktail.
As the conversation slowly sinks into the topic of dating, my gaze wanders to Ryker again. This time, catch me looking at him and smile. My face immediately heats up, but I try to smile back.
Suddenly, Marcus throws the Frisbee too high and Ryker has to jump to catch it, which he does with the grace of a professional athlete. When he lands, he turns to us and waves.
"Do you want to join us?" he shouts.
Madison laughs and elbows me.
"Go, have fun. I'll enjoy the cocktail a little longer."
"I don't know... I don't have a swimsuit," I say uncertainly.
"Oh, who cares. Go and have fun."
I decide to accept the challenge. I get up and slowly walk down to the beach, feeling the sand get between my toes. As I approach, Ryker hands me a frisbee.
"Ready?" he asks, his eyes shining.
"I guess" - I answer with a smile.
And so we begin the game, laughing and throwing frisbees at each other. Marcus joins in, and soon the three of us are in lively competition. I'm doing well, although sometimes I have to jump because they deliberately throw high.
Then I get tired and sit down in the sand.
I look towards the ocean and see the sun slowly setting, casting golden hues on the waves. Everything is perfect. But deep down, I know this perfection will soon end. Perhaps it's best to enjoy it while it lasts.
Ryker then sat down next to me. I freeze and immediately turn to see Madison.
I don't see her in the bar and Marcus continues to throw and catch the Frisbee a little further away from us.
"What are you thinking Ky?"
"About everything" - I simply answer and he looks at me curiously.
"Specifically?"
"About summer. Plans. Families."
"Do you have a brother or sister?"
"I have a sister. From the age of four"- I smile when remembering Hazel. I haven't seen her all day so I'm starting to miss her.
"Do you have?"
He sighs.
"I have an older brother. We are not on good terms."
He then gets up and when I turn around I understand why. Heading towards Madison. They lean towards each other, talking quietly. Suddenly, Ryker leans in even closer and kisses her.
My heart stops, and a feeling of discomfort and sadness passes through me. I look down, feeling like an intruder at a moment that wasn't meant for me.
"Kyla, are you okay?" Marcus asked, obviously noticing my expression.
"Yes everything is fine. I'm just a little tired," I lie.
But actually, I feel really bad. I can't stand the sight of these two kissing. Even though I know they are together, now it seems so real, so painful
