The two sat down at the table, the aroma of the Kare-Kare filling the room. Aya couldn't help but feel a flutter of nervousness as she watched Mav pick up her spoon.
"Go on, try mo na," Aya urged, her eyes shining with excitement. "Wala 'yang lason."
Mav hesitated for a moment, her eyes flickering with uncertainty. She took a small bite, chewing slowly as if savoring the flavors. Aya held her breath, waiting for Mav's verdict.
Mav swallowed, her expression still neutral. "It's... good, Aya," she said, her voice steady.
Aya's heart soared at the compliment, but a small part of her couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. "Really? Are you sure? You seem... hesitant eh."
Mav took another bite, her eyes thoughtful. "It's really good. I appreciate the effort, Aya. It's just that..." she trailed off, her expression growing distant.
Aya's concern deepened. "Just what, Mav? Is something wrong?"
-
Mav's eyes widened as she realized what she had just eaten.
Her face turned pale, and without a word, she pushed back her chair and ran towards her room.
"Mav! Ano bang nangyayari?" Aya called out, her heart pounding with fear. She had never seen Mav look so distressed.
Mav didn't answer, her focus solely on getting to her room. Aya followed her, panic rising in her chest. She had no idea what was happening, but she knew it couldn't be good.
"Mav, please, talk to me! What's going on?" Aya's voice was filled with desperation as she watched Mav frantically search through her belongings.
Mav didn't respond, her hands trembling as she rifled through her drawer. "Where is it? Where's my medicine?" she muttered, her voice tinged with panic.
-
Mav's hands shook as she searched through her drawer, her breathing growing shallow. "Where is it? Where's my medicine?" she repeated, her voice growing more frantic with each passing second.
Aya's heart sank as the realization hit her. "Mav, are you... allergic to—?" she asked, her voice trembling with guilt.
Mav's eyes flicked up, filled with a mixture of fear and frustration. "Yes! I'm allergic to bagoong, and I can't find my meds!"
Aya's stomach churned with guilt. She had made a terrible mistake. "I'm so sorry, Mav. I didn't know. Let me help you find it."
Finally, Mav's fingers closed around a small bottle. She quickly shook out a pill and swallowed it, her expression a mix of relief and exhaustion.
-
Mav sat on her bed, her breathing slowly returning to normal.
Aya stood in the doorway, her heart heavy with guilt and worry.
The silence between them was thick, filled with the unspoken weight of what had just happened.
"Mav, I'm so, so sorry," Aya said softly, her voice barely a whisper. She felt tears pricking at the corners of her eyes.
Mav looked up, her expression softening. "It's okay, Aya. You didn't know. I should have told you about my allergy."
Aya nodded, guilt gnawing at her insides. "I just wanted to do something nice for you. I never meant to hurt you."
Mav sighed, a small smile tugging at her lips. "I know. I appreciate the thought, really. Just... let's be more careful next time, okay?"
Aya nodded, her heart heavy with regret. "I promise. No more surprises without checking first."
