I went to the computer lab the ninth day of March. Chase was sitting at a computer a few seats down. I quickly printed my papers off, but stopped on my way out.

I walked up to Chase and leaned down.

""Hey, are you selling baseball shirts this year?"

"Hey. No, I'm not in baseball this year," he mumbled. What? He and John loved baseball. And his best friends are all in baseball.

"Okay. Whoever is selling them, send them to me!"

"Okay! Will do!" He laughed, his cute, soft laugh.

'Stop it Brooke! We are friends!'

I left.

He stared at me during lunch again that day.

He never did send anyone my way.

Friday the thirteenth. You think it would would be a bad day.

I ran out to my car during study hall, looking like a fool cause the stupid office people said I had to do it fast.

I look ugly when I run.

I saw Nate walking out when I ran out. I flew past him. Coming back, I walked and said 'hi Nate' really softly.

He looked at me like I had two heads. What? He can have random conversations with me, but I can't say a simple hi?

Well, it sort of was a bad day, then I got home.

Nate accepted my friend request that night, along with Luna's.

I screamed so loud, my mom and Kyle almost died of heart attacks.

Nate is such a nice boy, and Luna said he wasn't ugly either.

But, a week later, Nate changed his relationship status to 'in a relationship'. He was dating his ex, and his best friend, Maddie.

I finally did it! I completed the mission dad gave me!

It was a Monday, of course.

Chase was at his locker, alone. Which he hasn't been for weeks.

That's why I put it off. Yeah! Let's go with that!

"Hey, what's your dads name?" I ask, walking up to him at his locker.

"Joseph, why?" He asked.

Well, that was easy. Where's a staples easy button when you need one?

"Oh, my dad wanted to know. My uncle went to college and was roommates with a Jacobs."

Oh. Who's your uncle?"

"I don't remember which one he said, Dale or Kenny."

"Oh cool! I'll ask my dad too." He shut his locker and started walking towards commons. So he wasn't taking the bus that day!

"Hey do you like maple syrup?" I asked, walking next to him.

"Yeah!"

"Do your friends like maple syrup?"

"Probably, why?"

"Do you like waffles and maple syrup?"

"Yes."

"Well, my dad- we make maple syrup. And he wanted me to invite kids who lived in the local area, not the city. Like you, Nate, Landon."

We went down through the pit as I said that, passing his brother.

"Oh! Cool. I'll ask them!"

"Yeah, and you can invite John too if you want. I mean, he is your brother and all," I said, pointing to John.

"Okay, I'm gonna go now. Think about it though."

He smiled, like he was doing the minute I walked up to him.

I thought this was the beginning of something. But boy, was I wrong.

I told dad that night that I asked Chase.

He was proud that I said two words to a boy without doing anything stupid.
