34. A Definitive Change

Kang Haram was a meticulous man once he put his mind to things, especially those that concern his daughter. The first order of things that he did to keep his wife in check was to strike a deal with the immediate staff surrounding him in his office because he knew they were reporting back to his wife. He promised to pay them double if they started to work as double agents for him and just like that, money was enough to tempt them to
take his offer.

For the second order of things he brought his Late wife’s sister's son who he exiled to their China branch under Sumi’s orders as she felt he was a threat. The nephew in question Seo Jeha, a Harvard business school graduate proved his worth by working diligently to reap success in the Chinese market. If there was a worthy successor to Kang Haram, it was his nephew. But unfortunately for Sumi, everything was happening under her very nose without her knowledge.

And thirdly, Inha’s father called for a sudden press conference that was scheduled to take place the day SEVENTEEN were leaving for their Japan tour.

Away from all the speculations of what the billionaire self-made man in the pharmaceutical industry was about to say, his daughter was busy helping her husband pack his things for the tour.

“You will be fine right?” Asked Wonwoo as he stood side by side as he was packing his things.

“I’ll be fine Wonwoo” she said, zipping up his toiletries in a bag. “I'll have the girls with me”

“Yeah, but Sarang is also pregnant and only FeiFei is staying back with you. It's unfortunate that the others have to come with us. Otherwise I would have been less anxious”

“It's not unfortunate Wonwoo. I'll be fine. Now let's hurry up. You don't have time” she said, pushing her husband to finish packing. But he gently pulled her towards him as he sat down on his chair and kissed her pregnant belly which made her blush.

“Don't trouble your mother, arasseo?” He spoke to his unborn twins who started kicking around the second they heard his voice.

“They are kicking. They know it's you” she said as she placed his hands on her belly. The twins seemed to calm down once they felt their father's touch. “They listen and react to you well,” Inha said, chuckling.

“I am their father, afterall” he said looking into her eyes with so much love and affection. “I love you. So I want you to stay safe until I return” he suddenly blurted out. Wonwoo didn't know why he suddenly expressed this thought but at that moment he felt the need for her to know how much he loves her.

“I love you too” she said and before she could assure that she'll be safe, a knock interrupted her. It was Seungkwan asking his hyung to hurry up.

Soon Inha was standing next to Sarang and Fei by the entrance as their husbands and the others were wheeling their suitcases out. She chuckled and nudged Fei whose face was bright red after Jun gave her a goodbye kiss on her lips. And then they left.

“Mwo ya? Jun oppa is getting bold I guess?” Inha teased her friend as the three women sat down on the couch.

“And what about you Eonni? Did I just witness Seungcheol oppa wiping his tears as he left?” She teased Sarang too.

“Ya! What about your husband then? He had such a forlorn expression on his face. Did you guys have a fight or something?” Sarang asked her as she started to switch channels on the TV.

“No, he was just worried,” Inha said as she caressed her stomach. For some reason, she knew that her unborn babies also missed their father. “When they were planning the tour for these dates, he didn't think I'd get this big in such a short amount of time because of the twins. So he's just worried”

“I understand. We'll take care of you” Fei said, hugging her friend.

“I know,” she said, nuzzling her head into Fei’s shoulder. Then she suddenly sat up after seeing the TV. “Oh Eonni, can you go back to the previous channel?” And Sarang complied with her wishes.

Kang Haram’s press conference was being telecasted live and Inha wondered what it was about. She did meet her father after that day where they reconciled in Wonwoo’s parental house in Changwon. But she didn't know anything about what he was upto and was quite surprised that he was holding a press conference. What surprised her even more was seeing her cousin Seo Jeha grace the podium with her father. Within minutes, the press conference turned the whole society upside down.

Kang Haram just announced that he was stepping down from his position as the president of the company and that he would pass on his mantle to Seo Jeha, his nephew. Jeha took over the mic and promised the people that their beloved pharmaceutical company would be in safe hands and put forth a plan that included a complete corporate restructuring.

“It also came to my notice regarding the misuse of stocks and shares in the company. Keeping up with my uncle's vision of throwing away the weeds that harm the company's values, I promise to find those who are guilty of manipulating and accumulating shares and punish them properly by creating an internal audit committee.” Jeha said with conviction through the screen as if letting Sumi know that her days are over.

“Also I am planning to request the police to open an investigation into my aunt’s death as the circumstances leading to her demise have been quite sketchy. After all this company was built with her blood, sweat and tears as well and that finding the cause of her death is the least I could do to honour her life who contributed so much towards the scientific community as a wonderful scientist” he said and ended his succession speech.
