"It's just bollocks!" Thea pushed the wheeled table away from her bed, the very bland lunch she hadn't even started along with it.
"I much preferred looking after you when you were unconscious."
"You speak to all your patients that way Brenda or just me?"
"This is a good thing! Your not ventilated, your drains out, your catheters out, your taking tablets orally, your wasting a bed in the ICU. HDU is just the same." She sat at her chair, filling in the minimal paperwork she had to do now.
"It's not the same, I won't have my own room, I'll be surrounded by sick people and I still don't understand why I can't go home!"
"Because you only woke up last week! No one gets discharged straight from the ICU. No one. You need physiotherapy, lots of it, you need to stop declining your painkillers and your memory needs to improve."
"There's nothing wrong with my memory." She mumbled grumpily.
"What was Carla wearing when she came to see you yesterday? You loved it, you mentioned it more than once."
"I hate you." Thea had no idea what Carla was wearing yesterday and it hurt her head just trying to recall the memory.
"You love me really."
"Morning." Carla happily walked through the door, smiling at the pair of them.
"Afternoon." Thea clarified.
"Ok, good afternoon."
"She's not in a great mood." Brenda explained.
"Don't talk about me like I'm not here and my mood is fine, it's the system that's rubbish. It's like prison."
"Oh. Ok, then. Has anything happened that's made you feel this way?" Carla walked up to the bed and began stroking her hair lovingly, it always calmed her down.
"She-"
"Not me, not my decision but I do agree with it." Brenda managed to slip in before her patient went on another tirade.
"She or whoever she is working for, wants me to go to the high dependency unit and I want to go home but that's not allowed apparently!"
"Oh wow! That's amazing babe. The visiting hours are longer on HDU."
"Eurgh! Whatever. Your meant to be on my side. They've brainwashed you while I've been under. Is that why I was out so long Brenda? Were you drugging me so you'd have time to turn my wife against me?"
"Of course not! Your just being a bit paranoid my love."
"Be nice babe. She's been here with you more than anyone else."
"Yes and I find that suspicious!"
"Good luck Carla. I'm going to get a coffee." Brenda shut the door behind her to give the couple some privacy.
"Talk to me Thea, what's going on in there?"
"I don't want to be here. I should be at home. With you in our bed."
"It will happen, it's just going to take time."
"Do you not want me home or something?"
"That's unfair Thea, you know I want you home but how are going to cope if you can't walk the stairs and your memory-"
"Fuck my memory!"
Carla looked at her wife, she was furious, seething with frustration and her foul mood could be seen all over her face and her body language.
