❝the moon doesn't shine without the sun.❞AFTER PONYBOY HAD EXPLAINED EVERYTHING I HAD MISSED, I WAS FEELING A LOT BETTER. I finally got in to go see Dally. He wasn't seriously injured, but they wanted to keep him overnight. Johnny, on the other hand, had it a lot worse than Dally and Ponyboy. The church had practically collapsed on him while he was in there. They weren't allowing visitors yet, but seeing him was at the top of my priority list. I could tell that the feeling was mutual with Ponyboy.
I tried to be positive, looking at the bright side. The good news was Ponyboy and Dallas were okay and didn't sustain any major injures. The bad news, of course, is that Johnny did. I didn't ever want to think about what would happen if Johnny died. He was my best friend in the world, and you don't ever want to imagine a place where your best friend is gone and you're alone. I couldn't talk to anyone about the stuff I talked to Johnny about. He was always different from anyone and everyone in the gang. He and I were meant to be some sort of duo. I didn't know what I would do if he suddenly wasn't around. I wasn't gonna let that happen.
When the nurses first let me see Dally, they didn't let me talk to him. But eventually they opened the door to his room and let me go in there and see him. He didn't seem bothered in the slightest that he was sitting in a hospital bed, he seemed unphased by everyone. Dallas was always nonchalant to a fault. I assumed this would be one of those moments that he would seem more affected, but I couldn't be mad. It was his nature.
"Took you long enough." Dallas sat up, fiddling around with the bandages the nurses put around the lower part of his arm. I walked into the hospital room and rolled my eyes playfully. I was happy to see my brother. It was a weird kind of comforting to know that he was still his usual self. "Got any cigs on you?"
"No, and you can't smoke in here anyway." I shook my head, furrowing my eyebrows. I didn't smoke. I had tried it once but I had bad lungs and I felt like an idiot coughing every time I tried to take a drag. I also didn't like the idea of smelling like smoke all the time or messing up my lungs even more. Dally didn't care about that sort of thing. He didn't care about most sorts of things.
