THE DANCE WAS ONLY A FEW DAYS AWAY, and school was buzzing with kids excited to go. The dress Love bought me sat in the closet of my house, sitting there collecting dust. I knew I wasn't going to go, so I kept it in the bag so nothing would be wrong with it when we returned it.

I was walking to the post office expecting a letter from Sodapop. He was the only one who sent me mail, so you can imagine my surprise when I saw a letter from someone completely different alongside Soda's letter. I grabbed them both, looking at the front of the second letter.

My jaw nearly dropped as I read who it was from. Daniel Gordon. Only the biggest publisher in New York City as I knew it. A few months back, I had started writing in my journal again and Darry encouraged me to send it in to some kind of publisher, knowing my ambitions of someday becoming a published author. I decided that there wasn't a reason not to and sent a letter to Daniel Gordon telling him about my book. I didn't expect him to respond at all. But he did.
Part of me wanted to think that it wasn't anything big, but it was Daniel Gordon. He wouldn't send a letter back just saying 'Cool, good luck with that'. This had to mean something.

Tucking both letters into my bag, I rushed home, closing the door behind me. I didn't want to get my hopes up, but as I sat down at my desk and glanced down at the letter, I felt my heart start to race.

I carefully opened the letter. Starting to read, making sure I didn't miss a single word on the worn paper all the way from New York.

Jesse,

I read all about your journal. I think it's genius! If all the stories inside are told from the first person perspective of you in a regular leangth novel stretching beyond a journal, you'll have yourself a real hit. This story has potential to sell out in bookstores all over the country. Straight from the movies.
