𝐱𝐢𝐯. it gets better, kid
❝he isn't you.❞THE LAST FEW MONTHS DARRY HAD BEEN A BREATHING WATER ALARM FOR ME. Whenever I'd go over to the Curtis house, the first thing he'd ask when he saw me was "How much water have you had?" or "Did you drink your whole bottle yet?" The bottle in question was a two liter that he'd bought for me the day after I was in the hospital.
It had been two months since then, and Darry still hadn't relaxed about it. Gosh, he would not shut up or get off my case about drinking enough water. I understood why, he was just worried about me, but I felt a little like Ponyboy in the sense that Darry would not get off my back about it. It made me feel a little better because while Darry was so worried about me, it gave Ponyboy a little breathing room. Maybe I should worry Darry out more often.
Things had been a whole lot better since that night at the hospital, at least health wise. In terms of what was going on with Ponyboy and I, nothing happened. Nothing changed. It was all the same as it was before. I suppose I was wrong about that look in Pony's eyes, because he'd flee the building the moment I walked in and played it off like it wasn't because of me.
And I was in no mood to go after him and stop him. I was still hurt because of what he said, even if it was months ago and he was right about everything. Even months later, I wasn't in the place to look in the mirror and do some self reflection. Sure, I was still cold and rather stoic, but there were days where it felt like the old me was back. Those moments were the moments I stuck around for.
It was about one year ago that Dallas and Johnny died. I wasn't sure how to feel. The gang didn't really either. But Darry and Love surprised all of us when they said we were all going up to Love's family house out in the country. The perks of being a Soc. We were all gonna go for that anniversary, to celebrate Johnny and Dally. Dal had never gone out to the country, but he talked about it like he wanted to. Johnny didn't either, he only once left Tulsa, and that was running away with Ponyboy.
