Sam sits on his and Colby’s shared bedroom balcony. He hums a tune to himself not noticing Colby standing behind him. He continues to hum and smiles to himself. He starts to sing quietly.
“A town down some country road, I can see it now. I take it everywhere I go. The creek sways..I can almost hear it now. Like it’s saying ‘you’re not the only one who wants out.’ I memorized those roads. Somewhere out in the wide country, someone’s falling in love in a backseat-giving it away like their hearts won’t break.”
Colby stays quiet and records him.
“Bless the young hearts, sipping cheap beer. Getting drunk with their friends for the first time like it won’t change. Til everything changes.” His accent starts strongly coating his words. “They never leave, they’re all having babies now. Living off the gossip of a cruel small town.” He hums again. “Don’t recognize my own face. So I go. Everything changes. There’s nothing here for me anymore.” Sam’s starts to whistle the tune he was humming. “Somewhere in the wide country I was falling in love in a backseat, gave it away. I sipped cheap beer, got drunk with my friends for the first time hoping nothing would change. Then, everything changed.” Sam smiles to himself, remembering his past.
“You need to sing more babe.” Colby finally says, kissing his lover's head. Sam jumps.
“Hi there baby.” His accent still coats his words. “How long have you been there?”
“The entire time.” Colby chuckles and sits next to Sam. Sam's face flushed from embarrassment. “What? Tell me more about your past..I know you showed me, but tell me more please.”
“I-I don’t know.”
“Please babe. I like listening to you talk and sing.” Colby smiles. “Tell me what you did before it all changed.”
Sam looks off somewhere, thinking. He laughs to himself. Colby looks confused. Sam hums again, letting his accent free.
He pauses for a moment. “My little nothing town, the two room house I came from. The man I got my name from-I don’t even know where he is now.”
Colby gives a slight smile, listening.
“Hammer and nails, stacking them bales. I’m dog tired by 5 but I’m ready to raise hell. Beth is getting ready, I’m gassing up the ford. The moon comes up and the sun goes down. We find a spot out in the woods. Twisting it off and passing it around. That fireball whiskey whispers temptations in my ears.” Sam sings. “Dance in the dust, with the radio blasting. That’s how we do it round there.”
Colby hums along.
“Mud on the grips, wild cherry on her lips. I’ve got the country charm turned all the way on.” Sam looks at Colby and smiles.
“How would your friends describe back then sam?” Colby asks. Sam laughs.
“God. ‘He’s like a disease. He’s like a curse, like a drug.’” Sam sings and makes air quotes. “‘He's a good time cowboy casanova. He looks like a cool drink of water, but he’s candy coated misery.’” Sam shakes his head with a chuckle. “Of course they all made jokes, but looking back I was really like that.” Sam says, before he continues. “‘He’s the devil in disguise. A snake with blue eyes. He only comes out at night.’” Sam shakes his head.
“Really? I don’t think you’re like that now.” Colby says. “Well you are a snake with blue eyes, I get that.” Colby laughs.
“Yeah yeah. I know it.” Sam glances off at the sky. Colby leans over and kisses Sam’s cheek. Sam smiles. “Maybe it was best I left that town when I did. Almost everything has changed about me.”
They grow quiet and watch the sunset in the distance.
