DAVID'S POV

The glittering chandeliers of the ballroom seemed to mock my inner turmoil, their light reflecting off the polished floor in dizzying patterns.

A sigh escaped my lips, a puff of warm air in the cool, conditioned space, as I watched my parents disappear into a throng of elegantly dressed wolves, their laughter echoing softly across the crowded room

A sigh escaped my lips, a puff of warm air in the cool, conditioned space, as I watched my parents disappear into a throng of elegantly dressed wolves, their laughter echoing softly across the crowded room. "Walton," they'd chirped, their eyes alight with genuine pleasure at the prospect of reconnecting with old friends. And just like that, I was left to navigate the swirling currents of polite conversation and forced smiles alone.

My inner wolf, usually a constant companion, a comforting presence whispering instincts and emotions, remained stubbornly silent. Ever since our paws touched the familiar soil of our homeland, a strange, vibrating anticipation had settled within her. I could feel her excitement, a low thrumming beneath my skin, but when I reached out, seeking the reason for her heightened state, I was met with a wall of cheerful secrecy. It was maddening. She was practically bouncing with unspoken joy, and yet, she wouldn't share her secret.

It's a celebration party of the alpha's son of Black Moon pack as today his sixteenth birthday but it's mostly for him to find his mate and official become the leader of the pack as alpha need their luna to run their pack together.

To make matters worse, Chris wasn't here. My best friend, my confidant, the one person who could usually decipher the tangled mess of my thoughts, had vehemently refused to attend Kevin's sixteenth birthday celebration.

"That pompous little... alpha wannabe," he'd muttered darkly when the invitation arrived, his usual easygoing demeanor replaced by a scowl that could curdle milk.

I still didn't understand the depth of his animosity towards Kevin. By all accounts, Kevin was everything a future alpha should be - strong, charismatic, and well-respected within the pack. Everyone said so. But Chris's aversion was unwavering, leaving a noticeable void in my evening.

I drifted towards a less crowded corner, the murmur of conversations washing over me like a distant tide. The air was thick with the scent of expensive perfume and the underlying musk of shifting wolf forms, a familiar aroma that usually brought a sense of belonging.

Tonight, however, it only amplified my feeling of being adrift.

Then, my gaze fell upon him.
Standing at the center of the gathering, surrounded by a group of admirers, was Kevin Walton.

He was even more striking than I had imagined

He was even more striking than I had imagined. Tall and powerfully built, with an air of quiet confidence that commanded attention. His dark long hair, worn long, framed a face that was both handsome and intense. He exuded an aura of strength and authority that was both captivating and slightly intimidating.

I couldn't deny the immediate pull I
felt towards him. There was an undeniable magnetism about him, a raw power that resonated with his own dominant nature. I understood why he was so revered, why his name was spoken with such admiration.

Kevin's laughter boomed across the room, a confident sound that drew admiring glances. He stood surrounded by a coterie of admirers, his newly claimed alpha aura radiating power and assurance.

My parents, their faces beaming as they chatted animatedly with the Waltons. Kevin, basking in the glow of his coming-of-age. Even my inner wolf, buzzing with a secret joy I wasn't privy to. And then there was me, caught in the middle, feeling like an observer in my own life.

A pang of something akin to... envy? No, not envy. Perhaps just a sense of being... disconnected. Everyone else seemed to fit so seamlessly into this world of tradition and expectation.

What was it that everyone else seemed to know, that I was so frustratingly unaware of? The silence of my inner wolf felt heavier than ever, a tangible weight in the otherwise vibrant atmosphere. I just wished she would finally tell me what all the fuss was about.
