AUTHOR'S POV

Kevin's eyes never truly left David. He watched the younger interact with his sister, a knot of confusion tightening in his chest. The younger polite coolness was palpable, a stark contrast to the warmth his mate had shown him during their initial encounters. He couldn't understand the sudden shift. He attributed it to him being a female alpha, a prejudice he had unfortunately encountered in the past, despite the progressive circles they both moved in.

He longed to speak to the younger, to understand the reason behind his frosty demeanor, but the constant flow of conversation and the presence of their families made it impossible.

As the afternoon wore on, the atmosphere remained convivial, filled with reminiscing and plans for future gatherings. David, despite his inner turmoil, played the gracious hostess, ensuring everyone felt comfortable and attended to. But the effort was draining, and the constant awareness of Kevin's presence, his unwavering gaze occasionally meeting his, chipped away at the younger carefully maintained composure . Later he excused himself claiming a headache and retreated to his room.

A short while later, as the Walton family prepared to depart, Kevin made a hurried excuse to his parents, claiming he had left a important file behind and needed to retrieve it. His parents, caught up in their farewells to the Williams, didn't question his explanation.

Kevin retraced his steps, his heart pounding with a mixture of apprehension and determination. He knew he couldn't let this opportunity pass. He needed to understand David's sudden coldness, to clear the air, to somehow bridge the growing chasm between them.

He still believed the younger initial attraction to him had been genuine, and he couldn't fathom what had caused such a drastic change. The thought that it was solely due to his secondary gender status felt insufficient, a simplistic explanation for the profound shift in his mate demeanor.

He found the door to David's room slightly ajar. Hesitantly, he pushed it open and stepped inside.

David was standing by the window, his back to kevin, his silhouette framed by the soft glow of the evening light. The younger looked lost in thought, his posture radiating a quiet sadness.

"David?" Kevin said softly, his voice barely above a whisper.

David stiffened at the sound of his voice. He turned slowly, his eyes widening slightly in surprise, then hardening with a cool reserve.

"What are you doing here, Kevin?" His voice was flat, devoid of any warmth.

Kevin stepped further into the room, his gaze searching the younger's. "I wanted to talk to you. I... I don't understand what's changed." He hesitated, choosing his words carefully. "I thought... we had a connection. But today, you've been so..."

"Distant?" David finished for him, a hint of bitterness lacing his tone. "Perhaps you're mistaken about that initial 'connection' Kevin."

The younger words stung, but Kevin pressed on. "I don't think so. I felt it, and I thought you did too. Is it... is it because I'm a female alpha? If that's the issue, David, I can assure you..."

"It has nothing to do with that," David interrupted sharply, his voice laced with an emotion that Kevin couldn't quite decipher. It wasn't just dislike; there was a layer of hurt, of something deeper that he couldn't comprehend.

Before he could probe further, before he could ask what was truly troubling the younger, David cut him off again, his voice cold and dismissive. "I don't know what you're talking about, Kevin. I barely know you. Whatever 'connection' you think we had is purely in your imagination."

His words were like a slap in the face, leaving Kevin stunned and bewildered. He searched the younger eyes, trying to find a flicker of the warmth he thought he had seen before, but they remained shuttered, unreadable.

"But... David..." he stammered, confusion clouding his features.

"Please leave, Kevin," he said, his voice firm, brooking no argument. "I have nothing more to say to you."

Defeated and utterly confused, Kevin turned and left the room, the weight of the younger rejection heavy on his shoulders. He couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to his coldness than just a dislike for female alphas. There was a pain in the younger eyes, a guardedness that hinted at something he couldn't fathom.

Unbeknownst to Kevin, as he made his way back to his family, David's father, Mr. William, had been engaged in a quiet conversation with Mr. Walton. During their discussion about the successful reunion of their families, Mr. Walton, in a moment of familial pride and perhaps a touch of oblivious enthusiasm, had mentioned the burgeoning connection between their children.

"It seems Kevin has taken quite a liking to your David," Mr. Walton had chuckled, completely unaware of the undercurrent of tension. "If they were mates, it would be wonderful as this friendship blossomed into something more, wouldn't it? Our families joining in such a way..." He trailed off, a hopeful smile on his face, envisioning a future where the Williams and Walton legacies were even more deeply intertwined but only if they were mate .

Mr. Williams, a shrewd and observant man, had noted David's strained demeanor throughout the afternoon and Kevin's persistent, almost bewildered, gaze. He had sensed that something was amiss, that the situation was far more complex than Mr. Walton's optimistic assessment. However, he also knew his son. He knew his quiet strength and his fiercely independent spirit. If something was troubling him, David would confide in them when he was ready. Mr. William wouldn't pry or push.

So, he simply offered a polite, non committal smile to Mr. Walton, his inner unease growing.

As the Walton family finally departed, leaving the Williams mansion bathed in the soft hues of twilight, the air felt heavy with unspoken words and unresolved emotions.

Kevin left feeling rejected and confused, still completely unaware of the devastating misunderstanding that had taken root in David's heart.

David retreated to his solitude, the pain of his perceived betrayal a heavy weight in his chest. And his parents watched him with quiet concern, their protective instincts on high alert, trusting that their son would eventually share the burden he was carrying.

The celebration of familial unity had inadvertently become the backdrop for a burgeoning heartbreak, a tangled web of miscommunication and unspoken pain that threatened to unravel the very bonds the two families sought to strengthen.
