AUTHOR'S POV
In the weeks leading up to the private mating ceremony, a peculiar routine settled between Kevin and David.
Driven by a sense of responsibility and a burgeoning, albeit complicated, affection, Kevin made frequent visits to William’s mansion to be near the younger. He found himself increasingly attuned to his needs, a protective instinct kicking in as he witnessed the subtle changes brought about by his pregnancy.
One of the more curious aspects of this new dynamic was David’s sudden and often bizarre food cravings. He would request the strangest combinations – pickled herring with chocolate sauce, raw onions dipped in honey, sour berries mixed with whipped cream.
These culinary whims were utterly baffling to Kevin, whose own palate was far more conventional.
He couldn’t help but tease the younger gently on one occasion, a small smile playing on his lips as he presented the younger with a plate of olives stuffed with peanut butter.
“Are you sure about this, David? Your stomach isn’t staging a rebellion?”
David, however, merely grinned, his eyes sparkling with amusement.
“Don’t knock it ‘til you’ve tried it, my soon-to-be mate,” he retorted, a playful glint in his eyes. And before Kevin could protest, he had insisted he try a spoonful of the concoction.
His initial grimace quickly turned into a look of mild disgust, but the radiant smile that bloomed on David’s face at his discomfort made it somehow… worthwhile. He found himself indulging the younger strange cravings, even partaking in them occasionally, simply for the joy of seeing him happy.
Mr. and Mrs. Williams observed this unusual courtship with a mixture of amusement and affection. They often teased Kevin good-naturedly about how thoroughly their son had him wrapped around his little finger.
“Look at you, Kevin,” Mr. Williams would chuckle, shaking his head with a fond smile. “Spoiling our David rotten with all these… interesting delicacies. You must truly love him.”
Kevin’s response was usually a sheepish grin and a shrug. He wasn’t sure if “love” was the right word yet. His feelings for the younger were clear but for David .....
“He’s completely smitten,” Mrs. Williams would add, winking at her husband.
“Just look at him. He’d eat dirt if David asked him to, wouldn’t you, Kevin?”
Kevin would simply laugh, the easy camaraderie with them, a comforting balm to the underlying awkwardness of their impending union.
As the date for the private mating ceremony drew closer, the Williams and Walton families met to finalize the arrangements. The meeting was held in the neutral ground of a well-respected elder’s home, a space that fostered diplomacy and respect. The date was set for two weeks hence, a quiet affair with only immediate family present, as per David’s request.
During the meeting, Mr. and Mrs. Williams addressed the matter of Kevin’s punishment directly with Mr. Walton. Mr. Williams, his usual jovial demeanor replaced by a stern seriousness, looked his old friend in the eye.
“Samuel,” he began, his voice firm, using Mr. Walton’s first name, a sign of the gravity of the conversation, “Jennifer and I were deeply disturbed to learn of the… treatment Kevin received.”
Mrs. Williams echoed his sentiment, her expression conveying her shock and disappointment. “We have always considered you a man of honor, Sam. To think that you would inflict such pain on Kevin… it was difficult to comprehend.”
Mr. Walton, visibly uncomfortable, shifted in his seat. The guilt he had been carrying weighed heavily upon him.
“Jennifer, Jack,” he said, his voice subdued, “I… I can only offer my sincerest apologies. My actions were born out of anger and a misguided sense of protecting Kevin and our family’s reputation. In the heat of the moment, I acted rashly, and I deeply regret the pain I caused him.” He looked directly at Mr. Williams, his eyes filled with remorse. “To think that I would betray our friendship in such a way… it shames me.”
Mr. Williams listened intently, his gaze unwavering. He had known Samuel Walton for decades, considered him a close friend and a man of principle. The revelation of his brutality towards his own child had shaken him. After a moment of contemplation, he sighed, the tension in his shoulders easing slightly.
“Sam,” he said finally, his voice softer now, “we have been friends for a long time. I know that beneath that stern exterior, you care deeply for Kevin. What you did was wrong, deeply wrong, but I accept your apology. Just… promise me, as my friend, that such a thing will never happen again.”
Mr. Walton nodded solemnly. “I promise, Jack. It was a lapse in judgment, a moment I will forever regret.”
With that uneasy matter addressed, a fragile peace settled over the two families as they continued to discuss the arrangements for the upcoming ceremony.
Despite the unusual circumstances and the underlying tensions, there was a shared sense of purpose – to support David and Kevin as they embarked on this new chapter of their lives, and to welcome the new life that was growing within David. The path ahead was still uncertain, but the willingness of both families to bridge the gaps and offer their support provided a glimmer of hope for a harmonious future.
