AUTHOR'S POV

The sterile quiet of the hospital room was broken by a soft knock on the door.

David's parents, Jack and Jennifer, entered, their expressions a carefully balanced blend of concern for their son and a reserved curiosity towards Kevin.

Kevin stood to greet them, a knot of apprehension tightening in his stomach. He knew the news David had shared - the pregnancy, the agreement to a private mating ceremony - was a significant deviation from tradition. He braced himself for their anger, their disappointment, perhaps even their outright disapproval. He had, after all, played a part in their son's current predicament, and the secrecy surrounding the mating ceremony could easily be interpreted as disrespectful.

"Mr. and Mrs. Williams," Kevin began, his voice carrying a note of nervous formality. He wanted to convey his sincerity, his willingness to take responsibility.

"David has told me of your support, and I... I wanted to speak with you directly about our decision to proceed with a private mating ceremony." He hesitated, searching for the right words. "I understand this is not the traditional way, and I am prepared to accept any... reservations you may have."

To his utter astonishment, their reaction was not what he had anticipated. Mr. Williams stepped forward, his gaze surprisingly warm. "Kevin," he said, his voice firm but kind, "while the circumstances are... unexpected, our primary concern is David's well-being and the happiness of our grandchild."

Mrs. Williams followed, her eyes filled with a gentle understanding that eased some of the tension within him. She reached out and took his hands in hers, her touch surprisingly comforting. "We were angry, Kevin," she admitted, her gaze direct. "Angry at both of you. This was not the path we envisioned for David. But we also understand that you are both young, and... well," she offered a small, almost teasing smile, "it takes two to tangle, as they say. We don't place the blame solely on your shoulders."

A wave of relief washed over Kevin, so potent it almost buckled his knees. He had expected condemnation, perhaps even outright hostility. To find understanding and a surprising lack of animosity was a profound shock. He felt a genuine surge of gratitude towards David's parents.

"Thank you," he managed, his voice thick with emotion. "Thank you for understanding. My intentions have always been... honorable, despite how things have unfolded."

Mrs. Williams chuckled softly, a warm, motherly sound. "Honorable, perhaps a bit impulsive," she teased gently, a twinkle in her eye. Kevin couldn't help but offer a small, sheepish smile in return. The unexpected lightness of the moment eased some of the heavy burden he had been carrying.

As the conversation flowed, a sense of camaraderie began to develop. Mr. Williams spoke of the responsibilities of parenthood, offering words of encouragement and support. Mrs. Williams shared her own experiences, her gentle wisdom a soothing balm to Kevin's anxieties. He felt accepted, not as an outsider who had brought unforeseen complications into their lives, but as someone who was now, in a very real sense, part of their family.

It was during a moment of shared quiet, as Mrs. Williams reached out to place a comforting hand on his back, that a sharp, involuntary growl escaped Kevin's lips. The sound was low and guttural, a primal reaction to the sudden pressure on his still-tender wounds. Mrs. Williams' hand froze, her brow furrowing with concern. Mr. Williams' eyes narrowed, a flicker of alarm crossing his face. They exchanged a silent look, a question passing between them.

"Kevin, are you alright?" Mrs. Williams asked, her voice laced with worry.

Kevin's face flushed with embarrassment. He had hoped to keep his punishment a secret, especially from David's parents. He didn't want their pity, nor did he want them to think he was incapable of caring for their son .

"Yes, Mrs. Williams, I'm fine," he said quickly, perhaps a little too quickly. "Just a... a slight muscle strain." He offered a weak smile, hoping they would dismiss it.

But Mr. Williams was not easily convinced. His gaze was sharp and perceptive. "A muscle strain that makes you growl?" he questioned, his tone gentle but probing. He stepped closer, his eyes scanning Kevin's posture. "You seem a little stiff, Kevin. Are you sure you haven't injured yourself?"

Before Kevin could offer another flimsy excuse, Mr. Williams gently but firmly placed his hand on Kevin's back, his fingers probing with a practiced touch. Kevin winced involuntarily, another low growl escaping his throat.

Mr. and Mrs. Williams exchanged another, more serious look. The truth, Kevin realized with a sinking feeling, was about to come out.

"Kevin," Mr. Williams said, his voice now laced with concern, "what happened to your back?"

Cornered, and sensing their genuine worry, Kevin hesitated for a moment before sighing in resignation. He knew he couldn't hide it any longer. He briefly recounted the events of the confrontation with his father, omitting some of the more brutal details but explaining the punishment he had received for defying him and standing by David's decision.

As he spoke, Mr. and Mrs. Williams listened intently, their initial surprise giving way to a mixture of shock and a quiet fury. Mrs. Williams' hand tightened on Kevin's arm, her knuckles white. Mr. Williams' jaw clenched, his eyes hardening with anger towards his friend, Samuel.

When Kevin finished, a heavy silence filled the room. Mr. Williams then did something unexpected. He gently guided Kevin to sit on the edge of the bed and carefully began to lift his shirt. Kevin instinctively tensed, but Mr. Williams' touch was surprisingly gentle. He examined the still-healing welts and bruises on Kevin's back, his expression grim.

"This..." Mrs. Williams said, her voice low and dangerous, "this is how your father treats you for standing by our son?"

Kevin looked down, shame and a lingering ache mixing within him. "He... he was angry," Kevin mumbled, wanting to downplay the severity of the situation. "He felt I had disobeyed him."

Mr. Williams shook his head slowly, his eyes filled with a mixture of anger and sympathy. He then reached into his pocket and pulled out a small vial of herbal balm. "Jennifer and I always carry this," he explained, his voice softening slightly. "It helps with healing."

Against Kevin's quiet protests that he was fine, Mr. Williams gently began to reapply the soothing balm to his injured back, his touch surprisingly tender. Mrs. Williams stood beside him, her hand resting lightly on Kevin's shoulder, her gaze filled with a protective warmth.

"Why didn't you tell us, Kevin?" Mrs. Williams asked softly, her voice laced with concern. "If we had known..."

Kevin shook his head. "I didn't want to worry you more, especially with David being unwell. And... I didn't want him to feel guilty. David has the right to make his own decisions, and I stand by them, consequences or not."

Mr. and Mrs. Williams exchanged a look filled with understanding and a newfound respect for Kevin sitting before them. His selfless concern for their son, even in the face of his own pain, spoke volumes about his character.

"Kevin," Mr. Williams said, his voice now filled with a genuine warmth, "We are grateful for your courage and your loyalty to David. What your father did... it was wrong. But your actions speak volumes about the kind of mate you will be to our son."

Mrs. Williams nodded in agreement, her eyes filled with a motherly affection. "The Moon Goddess has chosen well, Kevin. You are a good and kind person." She reached out and gently squeezed his hand. "You need to take care of yourself too, you know."

Mr. Williams finished applying the balm and gently lowered Kevin's shirt. "We will not tell David about this, if that is your wish," he said, his gaze meeting Kevin's. "But you must promise us that you will allow us to help you heal."

"Thank you," Kevin said, his voice thick with emotion. The unexpected support and understanding from David's parents filled him with a sense of belonging he hadn't anticipated. He had expected anger, but he had found acceptance and even a form of parental affection.

As they continued to talk, the initial tension in the room completely dissipated. Mr. and Mrs. Williams reiterated their support for the private mating ceremony and their willingness to help in any way they could. They spoke of their excitement for the arrival of their grandchild and their hope for David's happiness.
