I followed my father to his study, the familiar scent of old wood and leather filling my senses. He sat behind his large oak desk, his gaze sharp and assessing.
"There are a few matters that need your attention," he began, his voice formal. He proceeded to outline the pressing issues – business deals, pack matters, and the usual demands of leadership.
I listened patiently, but my mind was elsewhere. My thoughts were with David, with our child, with the life we were about to build. "Dad," I interrupted, my voice firm but respectful, "I need to talk to you about something."
He raised an eyebrow, his expression curious. "Go on," he said. "I want to take a leave of absence," I said, my gaze unwavering. "From the business, for oversee business. "His eyes widened in surprise. "A leave of absence? Kevin, that's… unprecedented."
"I know," I said. "But I need to be there for David. This is his first pregnancy, and I want to be fully present, fully involved. And soon, I will be taking over as Alpha of the pack. I won't have this time then." My father studied me for a long moment, his expression thoughtful. I could see the conflict in his eyes – the duty to the pack versus the love for his son.
Finally, he sighed, a reluctant but understanding sound. "I see," he said. "I understand. Very well, Kevin. I will manage things here. But you will return, won't you?""Of course, Dad," I said, a smile tugging at my lips. "But for now, my place is with David."He nodded, a hint of a smile gracing his lips. "Very well, son. Take care of your family."
I left the study, a sense of relief washing over me. I had done it. I had secured my time with David. I found him waiting for me, his eyes filled with a mixture of curiosity and concern. "Everything okay?" he asked.
I smiled, taking his hand in mine. "Everything's perfect," I said. "Come on. I want to show you something." I took him to the mansion, eager to see his reaction. The drive was filled with a sense of anticipation, a bubbling excitement that I couldn't quite contain.
As we turned onto the long drive, the trees parted, revealing the estate. I watched David's face, his eyes widening in awe, his breath catching in his throat. His reaction was even better than I had imagined.
"It's… it's beautiful, Kevin," she stammered, her voice barely a whisper. "It's… like you." My heart swelled with pride. He saw me in this place. He saw the strength, the beauty, the… the home I wanted to create for us.
"I'm glad you like it," I said, my voice a low rumble. "I bought it for us, David. For our new beginning." His expression shifted, a mixture of shock, disbelief, and a burgeoning affection filling his eyes. It was a look that made my heart ache with tenderness.
We spent the next hour exploring the mansion, his hand in mine, his laughter like music to my ears. It was a perfect day, a perfect beginning to our life together. Afterwards, I took him to his parents' house. I knew he missed them, and I wanted to give them some time together.
The visit was warm and filled with love. His parents were happy to see him, and they welcomed me with open arms. Mom, of course, couldn't resist teasing me, her words laced with affection.
"Oh, you're such a thoughtful mate, Kevin," she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "Are you sure you're not just trying to keep our son all to yourself?"I felt my ears turning red, and David giggled, his laughter a sweet melody.
We spent the afternoon with his parents, enjoying their company and sharing stories. As evening approached, I reluctantly excused myself, explaining that I had some pack-related duties to attend to. "I have a meeting," I explained to David. "But I'll be back to get you later."
He nodded, her eyes filled with understanding. "Be careful," he said softly. I kissed him goodbye, my touch lingering, and promised to see him soon.

The meeting was held in the pack's meeting room, a large, imposing space filled with the weight of tradition and responsibility. As I entered, everyone greeted me with respect and deference.
My beta, Liam, approached me, his expression serious. "We have a situation, Alpha," he said. "Rogue wolves have been entering our territory, acting suspiciously. We apprehended a few of them."
My jaw tightened. Rogue wolves were a threat, a constant reminder of the dangers that lurked outside our pack's boundaries. "What do they want?" I asked, my voice low and dangerous. "We're not sure yet," Liam replied. "They're not talking. We're going to interrogate them."
I spent the evening dealing with the rogue wolves, interrogating them, trying to uncover their motives. It was tedious and frustrating work, but necessary for the safety of our pack. As I was about to leave, Liam approached me, a rare smile on his face. "Congratulations, Alpha," he said. "On finding your mate. He's beautiful." I nodded, a surge of pride filling me. "Thank you, Liam," I said. "He is."
Most of the pack didn't know about David yet. It was his decision to wait until after the baby was born to reveal our mating to everyone. He wanted to protect our child, to ensure its safety and acceptance. I respected his decision, even though I longed to shout from the rooftops that he was mine.
Finally, the work was done. Exhausted but relieved, I left the meeting room and headed to William's to take him home. Our home .
I couldn't wait to see him, to hold him in my arms, to feel his warmth beside me. The thought of him waiting for me was the only thing that had kept me going through the long and arduous evening.
