AUTHOR'S POV

The weight of his agreement to David's terms settled heavily upon Kevin as he made his way back to the Walton mansion. The initial relief of Williams understanding had been replaced by a gnawing emptiness. He was about to embark on a life-altering commitment, a mating ceremony that should have been a joyous union of two souls, but instead felt like a carefully orchestrated performance.

He needed to face his father, to inform him of the decision, to navigate the complex web of their family dynamics once more. The thought filled him with a weary resignation. He knew his father's primary concern was obedience and the continuation of their lineage. David's pregnancy had, in a twisted way, provided a path towards both.

As Kevin stepped into the grand hall of the Walton mansion, the familiar opulence felt cold and unwelcoming. His father, Mr. Walton, was in his study, the heavy oak door slightly ajar. Kevin took a deep breath and pushed it open.

Mr. Walton looked up from the papers on his desk, his expression unreadable. "Kevin," he acknowledged, his tone neutral. "You have returned."

"Dad," Kevin began, his voice steady despite the turmoil within him, "I have spoken with David and his parents. We have decided to proceed with the mating ceremony."

A flicker of something akin to surprise crossed Mr. Walton's face, quickly followed by a look of satisfaction. "So, you finally come to senses," he remarked, a hint of his usual authoritative tone returning. "The pregnancy has... expedited matters."

"Yes," Kevin confirmed, his jaw tightening slightly at his father's pragmatic assessment. He chose to ignore the underlying implication that David's decision was solely due to his condition.

"We will hold a private ceremony, within our families only, in a few weeks."

The news seemed to ripple through the Walton household with surprising speed. The initial shock that Kevin, who had so vehemently resisted his father's plans, was now agreeing to a mating ceremony was palpable. Whispers followed him through the corridors, and the hushed conversations ceased abruptly as he entered a room.

Mr. Walton, however, seemed genuinely pleased. A rare smile touched his lips as he spoke to Kevin later that evening. "I must admit, Kevin, I was... concerned by your defiance. But I am glad you have finally seen reason. This is the natural order. You will have a family of your own now, a legacy."

Kevin listened, a strange mix of emotions churning within him. His father's words echoed the very future David had outlined - a focus on lineage and appearances. He couldn't help but wonder if his father truly understood the circumstances, the lack of genuine affection that underpinned this union.

Unbeknownst to Kevin, Mr. Walton's reaction was more complex than mere satisfaction at his son's obedience.

Ever since the truth of Kevin's parentage had been revealed on his tenth birthday - the devastating revelation to Mrs Walton that he was not her biological son but the offspring of an affair between Mr. Walton and his second mate , making him a half-sibling to his supposed siblings - Mr. Walton had carried a heavy burden of guilt.

He had seen the yearning in Kevin's eyes for a true sense of belonging, a family of his own, a void that the carefully constructed facade of their family could never truly fill. He had revealed the truth, believing that secrets could not be kept forever, but the fallout had been a subtle but persistent distance between Kevin and the rest of the family.

Now, the prospect of Kevin finally having his own family, a connection that was undeniably his, brought a measure of relief and a hope that perhaps this would finally bring him the happiness he deserved.

When Kevin mentioned the private nature of the mating ceremony and the plan to hold a larger marriage ceremony after the delivery, Mr. Walton's initial reaction was one of disapproval. "Why the secrecy, Kevin? This is a momentous occasion. It should be celebrated openly."

But then, the memory of his own harshness, the brutal punishment he had inflicted on Kevin , flashed through his mind. The guilt, which had been a constant undercurrent in his thoughts since that day, resurfaced with renewed intensity. He had pushed Kevin to this point, had caused him pain for standing by his convictions. He couldn't, in good conscience, dictate every aspect of this new chapter in Kevin's life.

He sighed, a rare display of internal conflict. "Very well, Kevin," he conceded, his voice softer than usual. "A private ceremony... for now. But the marriage will be public. Our pack needs to know of this union."

Mrs. Walton's reaction was a mixture of shock and a quiet, heartfelt happiness for Kevin. The news of the pregnancy had initially taken her aback, but her maternal instincts quickly took over. Seeing Kevin, still bearing the marks of his father's punishment, stirred a deep protectiveness within her.

"Oh, Kevin," she said, her voice filled with concern as she noticed his still-guarded movements. "You should be resting. Your back... is it still painful?" Her hand instinctively reached out towards him, a familiar gesture of care.

Kevin offered her a small, reassuring smile. "I'm alright, Mom. Just a little stiff." He appreciated her concern, a constant reminder of the bond they shared, a bond that had been forged through years of shared life, despite the circumstances of his birth.

The news of Kevin's impending fatherhood and the circumstances surrounding it eventually reached his siblings. They had been aware of the tension in the household, the silent disapproval of their father towards David and Kevin's unusual defiance.

The revelation of his punishment had been met with a unified front of anger directed at their father. They had confronted him, their voices filled with a protectiveness they hadn't always shown Kevin in the past. The distance that had grown between them after the truth of their relationship had been revealed had created a void, a lack of shared intimacies. Kevin had never confided in them about David, and they, in turn, had not pried.

Now, learning that Kevin was to become a father, a wave of complex emotions washed over them. There was happiness for him, a genuine joy that he would finally have a family of his own. But there was also a pang of sadness, a regret that he hadn't felt comfortable enough to share such a significant part of his life with them.

They realized, with a sense of collective guilt, that the distance between them was not entirely Kevin's fault. Their own awkwardness and uncertainty about how to navigate their altered family dynamic had contributed to the silence.

They sought Kevin out, their expressions a mixture of excitement and remorse. "Kevin," his sister, Stella, began, her voice softer than usual, "we heard... about David. And the baby. We're so happy for you."

His brother, Michael, stepped forward, placing a hand on Kevin's shoulder. "Congratulations, brother. This is... big news." There was a genuine warmth in his eyes that Kevin hadn't seen in a long time.

Kevin looked at them, a wave of unexpected emotion rising within him. He saw the sincerity in their eyes, the genuine happiness for him, and the unspoken regret for their past distance.

The Walton mansion, for the first time in a long time, felt a little less cold.
