Payten

For the weeks that passed after July Fourth, Payten fought with urge to confront Adam. It had turned August and Adam was leaving for a week on a trip with his hockey team.

Payten sat at the table, her glass of water sitting between her hands, when Adam walked out of his room with two duffle bags and set them by the hallway that led to the front door.

"So how long is the trip?" Payten asked, knowing damn well how long it was but just wanting to start a conversation. Good thing she could blame it on the 'baby brain'.

"A week for the team and then a few days for me and Luca just ourselves." Adam grabbed a drink from the fridge and walked over to the table, taking a seat.

"Ah okay." Payten nodded, and then took a swig of her water, drinking what was left. "What time do you leave?"

"Ah pretty soon, they want us there early to get a headcount." Adam explained, and Payten got up from her seat and out her cup in the sink.

"Adam, can I ask you something?" Payten blurted, and turned on her heel to face Adam. He turned his body to face her and had a confused expression plastered on his face.

"Of course Payten, you can ask me anything."

"When exactly did you and Alison break up?" Payten watched as color drained from Adams face with each word she spoke. Adam cleared his throat, looking away.

"A while ago." He mumbled, just loud enough to hear.

"Why didn't you tell me?" Paytens voice was soft, her eyes still on Adam.

"I didn't know how to." Adam looked up at Payten, their eyes locking, neither one of them daring to look away.

"Why did you guys break up?"

"Payten, I really don't want to talk about it." Adam got up and tried walking off but Payten persisted.

"Well I do, you've kept this from me for months!"

"It's my business?! Do I have to tell you everything?" Adam turned around fast, his voice not quite a yell but still quite loudly to startle Payten and Marty who was snoozing on the couch.
