In times of need, we all need somebody to lean on. It may be a friend, a parent or sometimes a complete stranger. But for Payten, it just so happens to be her best friend, aka her old crush.

Adam
Adam paid the Uber driver and ran towards the hospital doors. He walked up toward the receptionist desk and waited til Lahr was off the phone before he spoke.
"I'm Adam Fantilli, I was called about my friend Payten Larson being in an accident. I'm her emergency contact." Adam told the nurse, who typed away at the computer.
"Okay, so Payten is still in surgery but they delivered the baby about 2 hours ago and she is in the NICU, you said you were a friend?"
"Technically yes but I'm all she has. Her parents are on this expedition thing and her husband is dead. I'm her emergency contact, that counts as something." The nurse looked at him, and then picked up the phone.
She spoke quickly, and then hung up, grabbing a nurse from around the corner.
"Will you take him to the NICU?" She asked the nurse, who nodded enthusiastically, and then she turned back towards Adam. "That baby needs somebody right now. The doctors will know you are there and will come there with updates."
"Thank you so so so much." Adam said, and then followed behind the other nurse.
They rode the elevator up, the silence was peaceful and not at all awkward. When they got off the elevator, they walked down a million hallways, and when they finally reached the NICU, the nurse led him to the window, and he peered in. She walked in and explained the situation to the head nurse, who then waved him in.
"Here, I'm Ava. Put these on and I'll take you to see her." She introduced herself and the other nurse bud her goodbyes and left. She grabbed a paper apron, mask and gloves, and handed them to Adam, who started to put them on.
Ava helped tie the back as Adams hands stopped working because the nerves had set in, even more if that's possible. He slid his hands into the latex gloves and gloves and followed behind Ava. He strung the masks behind his ears and pulled it up to cover most of his face.
She led him to a corner, and there she was. Tiny but above all else, perfect.
