Madeline-
There was a knock on my door, I felt my heart jump to my stomach. I flicked my wand, the papers disappeared off my desk. I whipped my sweaty palms on my pants, Draco was behind that door. It was the first time we were going to be talking since almost five years ago, he had opted out of lunch, making my nerves spike.
"Come in," I said, standing up as he walked in. He shut the door behind him, before walked up to my desk. His eyes raked over me, making me nervous, he managed a small smile before extending his hand.
"Madeline."
"Draco," I said, shaking his hand. His hands were large, almost engulfing mine, I felt a jolt of electricity running up my arm. Draco looked down at my engagement ring, his mouth almost tugged down before he dropped my hand so fast acting like my ring burned into his palm. I cleared my throat and gestured to the chair behind him.
"Please sit down." I said, he nodded sitting down. I sat across from him, taking out the folder for the Department of Law enforcement.
"So... I was surprised that you became the department head." I said, Draco raised an eyebrow at me, crossing his arms over his chest. The shirt strained against his muscles, why did he have to come back so fucking attractive, but I couldn't help stare at his auror uniform. It wasn't the traditional uniform they were supposed to wear. It was a long black combat trousers, with a tight black compression shirt, and thick black tightly laced up combat boots.
"Why?" He asked, sounding defensive.
"I just mean that you are the youngest department head that the department of Law enforcements ever had." I explained, feeling a blush creeping up to my face, Draco smirked, shrugging one shoulder.
"My friend was the ex-head. She wanted me to have the job." I nodded, looking down at the file.
"Well...congratulations."
"Thank you,"
We shifted the conversation to the department, he explained to me what the department of law enforcement does, ongoing cases that needed to be solved, what he wanted to see for the future of the department, and how were going to keep the funds coming in for the future.
"That should be everything." I said, I checked the last box off the list of the topics I wanted to talk to him about. Draco shifted in his chair and nodded.
"Well, I guess I should get going."
"Draco...I did actually want to talk to you about us." I said, his brow's furrowed, shaking his head at me.
"What do you mean?"
"I just mean that, we ended things so badly and we haven't spoken in five years. I just want things to be okay because we're in the same friend group, and-"
"Madeline stop. I'm going to try not to be awkward no matter what happened between us I'm not going to ruin our friend group." Draco said standing up, I stood up shaking my head.
"That's not what I mean either. I mean we should try to be friends Draco. What happened in the past is the past. And we should try to move on." Draco's jaw tightened; his eyes darkened, he gripped the back of the chair, his knuckles turning white.
"I just wish we could have ended things on better terms. We were so angry Draco. You were so angry, you left for years." I whispered; he still didn't reply. I stepped out from behind my desk, I put my hand on his arm, he stiffened under my touch.
"I still care about you a lot. I've missed you, and if we can't be together let's be friends."
"I can act like we were never in a relationship; I've been doing it for the last five years." He hissed; I pursed my lips. His words shouldn't hurt me this much.
"Draco that's not what I mean-"
"You broke my heart five years ago. You ripped my heart out, you ripped it into a thousand pieces, and stomped all over it when you wouldn't break off your engagement."
"There's a difference between couldn't and wouldn't." He turned his head, his eyes so dark, they were filled with so much anger, I wanted to shrink under his gaze, but I didn't let myself.
"But there's no difference when it came to breaking my heart. I didn't come back here for you your highness. I came back here because I miss my friends and family, and I'm tired of hiding." Draco said, he ripped his arm out of my hand. He squared his shoulders.
"Thank you for your time about talking about the department, your highness. It's been a pleasure talking to you." Draco hissed, he walked over to the door and slammed it shut behind him. The pictures in my room of ex-ministers shook behind him.
That wasn't how the meeting was supposed to go. This was supposed to be a good meeting, it was supposed to be him agreeing with me, saying we will be okay. But this...this fight is not how I wanted my first conversation with Draco to go. I signed rubbing my head, if I get white hairs already, I'm going to be so fucking pissed. I sat down resting my head against my cold desk. This talk with Draco was another screw in the box on why I needed to give Alexander a better chance.
