Madeline-
I took a deep breath, staring at myself in the mirror. Today was my first official day of being Minister. I wore a dark grey suit, with a black off the shoulder top. I wore medium sized hoop earrings, and several rings on my fingers. I grabbed a handful of floo powder from the little pot on my fireplace. I threw it in the red fire turning it a light shade of green as my door opened.
"I wanted to wish you good luck on your first day." Elijah said, poking his head into my room. He was dressed head to toe in his curse breaker uniform. After he graduated Hogwarts, he went into working for Gringotts bank as a curse breaker. He travels all over the middle east searching for treasures to bring back to England, and somehow managing to come back right before family dinners every night.
"Thank you," I said, managing a wobbly grin. I pursed my lips trying to stop the nervous laugh bubbling up my throat.
"Don't be nervous, you were literally born to be a boss. I mean you boss me around already." Elijah said, he crossed his arms over his chest, and leaned against my door.
"Ha, very funny." I muttered, picking up another handful of floo powder.
"Yeah, I think I am." He winked. I laughed stepping into the fire.
"Have a good first day!"
"The Ministry!" I shouted dropping the floo powder, I felt the ground pull out from underneath me. I fell through the floo, catching glimpse of houses and people as I passed, I felt the soot sticking to my clothes and face, before I finally landed in my office. I stepped out of the fireplace, Juliette was already waiting in my office for me, she jumped up out of my chair, and bowed.
"Your Highness,"
"Juliette," I smiled, taking out my wand from my pocket. I flicked my wand and the soot disappeared off my body, I smoothed back my hair as she looked down at the very large blue notebook in her hand.
"So, there's a stack of papers that you have to look over on your desk, and you need to finish them by this morning. You then have meetings with the heads of departments. You have your first meeting with the head of the Magical Accidents and Catastrophes at 1 o'clock. That's all you have your schedule today." Juliette said, I nodded.
"Okay, that isn't...too bad for the first day." I walked behind my desk and sat down on my very large leather chair; the stack of papers reached up to my chin. I signed as Juliette bowed and excused herself.
"Do you have a minute for a coffee break?" I heard Daphne's voice float into the room. I looked up as she kicked the door shut behind her. She held two cups of coffee in her hands, stamped with the ministry's cafeteria logo. A big bold M.
"You're a life saver!" I said, as she handed me the cup. Ever since we won the battle of Hogwarts, the ministry needed to rebuild itself. My father swept in and suggested including Muggle culture into the wizarding culture, a way to make every muggle feel included, and to have wizards learn more about them. So, wizards started dressing like muggles, trying their foods, music, movies, and more.
"Oh! This is so good! How have I never tried this?" I said, as she plopped in the chair across my desk.
"I don't know...I came here to wish you luck! First day..."
"Daphne say what we really want to say." I laughed, setting down my coffee mug next to the picture of my family, and Alexander.
"You're going to have a meeting with Draco, how's that going to go?"
"I have no clue." I signed; I could feel the anxiety in my stomach churning along with my breakfast. It made my stomach clench in pain.
"Well...I hope it's not too bad, and I hope you tell me everything about it later." She smirked, I drank my cup of coffee, staring at her over the rim of my cup. She had an evil twinkle in her eyes, the same one she had in Hogwarts, one that I knew very well.
"Daphne, just because Draco is back does not mean that we are going to get back together. That is not going to happen. I am with Alexander."
"I didn't say anything!" Daphne said, she lifted her hands up defensively.
"Oh please, your face says it all. Your eyes are giving the same evil eyes you had in Hogwarts." She chuckled under her breath before leveling me with a hard stare.
"Mads, I do want to talk to you about this though. I don't want you or Draco to get hurt again. Last time he ran to America! And I don't even think you even try with Alexander."
"That's not true!"
"Please Mads, I've seen you two together. You don't want to be with him, even after five years. You don't want to give him a chance. And Draco's not going to be your Draco again. I want to see you happy." I signed, looking down at my lap. I spun my engagement ring around my finger, it suddenly felt very heavy.
"What are you saying Daph?" She stood up, walking around my desk till she stood right next to me, putting her finger under my chin and tilted my head up forcing my gaze to meet hers.
"I want you to give Alexander a chance, I want to see you happy and in love." She said, leveling me with a hard stare.
"I have,"
"Give him a bigger chance. A fairer chance, okay?" I ran my tongue across my teeth but nodded.
"Okay, I'll try."
"Good, that means you have to be normal with Draco, he's going to be part of our group again."
"I will, I promise." She nodded before kissing the top of my head.
"Perfect! I have to go back to work, I'll see you at lunch, bye!" Daphne stood up straight, squaring her shoulders, and walking out of my office. I stared at my engagement ring again, it was beautiful, I always thought it was. But Daphne was right, I need to give Alexander a better chance, and that's what this ring also means.
