Early morning sunlight streamed through the kitchen window, casting a warm, golden glow across the room. Lewis stood at the kitchen counter, his dark brown eyes focused on the strawberries as he carefully sliced them. After slicing the first batch of strawberries, he placed them in a container, a smile plastered on his lips as he imagined Simone eating them—or her watching him eat them.
"Careful" Mila said with a light laugh, her voice filled with amusement. Lewis glanced at the older woman who had just entered the kitchen area "Good morning!" she greeted
"Buenos días, Mila" he replied with a reassuring smile "You don't need to worry" he added
The older woman leaned against the counter, a warm cup of tea in her hands. She loved these quiet moments in the morning, enjoying the fresh morning smell "how's my daughter? is she acting weird?"
A memory from last night flashed in his mind, making him chuckle. He wiped his hands on a clean towel and turned to face her "Last night I woke up and I saw her in front of my face, staring at me—and she was touching my nose and eyelashes! I got surprised and confused...but don't worry about it Mila, because I love it" he admitted with a sheepish grin.
Mila burst out laughing at what she had just heard, her whole face turning red. She had to set her cup of tea down to avoid spilling it "Oh, Lewis that’s hilarious!" she said between fits of laughter "I can just picture it! Oh god, your child will surely look like you!"
"Oh really?" Lewis asked in curiosity. "But I would love if he or she looks like Simone." A soft smile spread across Mila's face, and she gently tapped Lewis's shoulder.
"Thank you for having so much patience, Lewis. I'm truly happy that my daughter found you" Mila said warmly, reaching out to grasp Lewis's hand. "I'm excited to meet your parents and tell them they raised a kind and caring man"
Lewis smiled, feeling a surge of warmth at Mila's words. He squeezed her hand gently. "Thank you, Mila. That means a lot to me" he replied sincerely.
"Mamá? Lewis?" The two glanced at Simone, who had just entered the kitchen. "Ready for the long trip?" she asked. The two nodded. "What's happening in here?"
Lewis nervously glanced at Mila. She quickly understood the hint in his eyes. "Oh, I was just telling Lewis a funny story about your Papá when he was courting me" Mila said. Simone nodded and shifted her attention to Lewis, who quickly put a smile on his face and proudly showed her the two containers filled with sliced strawberries.
"okay" she whispered and left the kitchen area to finish her own preparations for the trip.
"Oh... good luck, Lewis" Mila chuckled and tapped his back "I guess Mama bear is not in a good mood today"
Lewis closed his eyes tightly and took a deep breath before he quickly followed Simone upstairs. As he reached her bedroom door, he gently pushed it open. Inside, he found Simone kneeling beside her open duffle bag, carefully folding clothes and placing them inside.
"Need any help? or would you like some strawberries or oranges?" he asked gently as he entered the room.
"I don't need your help and I'm not hungry" Simone replied curtly, throwing a glare in his direction.
Lewis raised an eyebrow, surprised by her sharp tone "Are you mad?" he asked gently, sitting down on the carpeted floor across from her "It's fine, if you want to touch my nose, eyebrows, and eyelashes again—"
"I do not want to" Simone interrupted, her voice firm
Lewis pursed his lips, fighting back not to smile, scared that Simone might see it and get even more upset. He took a deep breath and carefully studied her face. She was clearly frowning, her brows furrowed in frustration. "Simone, can you touch my face again?"
