“We should change your doctor, Simone” Lewis suggested gently as he knelt in front of her, holding her pair of white converse sneakers in his hands. His voice was soft, but there was an underlying seriousness in his tone. He paused for a moment, his gaze locked with hers, his dark brown eyes filled with concern and care. “What do you think? I know a lot of other professionals who could help us better, you know, considering everything.”

Simone shook her head slightly, she appreciated how protective Lewis was, always thinking ahead, always worrying about her well-being. She knew that Lewis has many connections with great doctors but Dr. Sharma had been by her side for three months of her pregnancy, offering care and reassurance, and Simone trusted her completely.

“Lewis, Dr. Sharma is the best and she’s sweet” she replied, her voice calm yet firm “I’m more comfortable with her”

He studied her expression for a moment, seeing the confidence in her choice. “Okay” he said, though the worry lingered in his eyes. He wanted everything to be perfect for her and their baby, he wanted the best for his family. With a soft sigh, he nodded, accepting her decision for now.

He reached for her left foot, slipping the white sneaker on with care, making sure it was snug but comfortable. His touch was gentle, deliberate, as if this small act of tying her shoelaces could somehow protect her from all the uncertainty ahead. Once her left foot was taken care of, he did the same with the right, his fingers moving slowly as he looped the laces and tied them into a neat bow.

It was a simple gesture—putting on her shoes for her—but in that moment, it felt like much more. For Simone, it wasn’t just about the shoes it was about the love and attention he poured into every action, every glance. As she watched him, her heart swelled with warmth.

"Alright, Mi amor” Lewis said softly, giving her a quick kiss on the knees before standing up. The playful kiss wasn’t lost on her, and it sent her heart racing just a little. She immediately rolled her eyes, trying to mask the sudden wave of affection that hit her.

Lewis chuckled, amused by her reaction. He could tell she was trying to play it cool, but he knew her well enough to see past her façade. “What’s that for?” she asked.

“Just showing my love” he replied with a mischievous grin, his tone teasing but sincere. He stepped back slightly, his hands slipping into his pockets, though his eyes never left hers.

Simone rolled her eyes again, but this time there was a smile tugging at the corners of her lips. “Shut it, Lewis” she muttered, shaking her head. Despite her playful resistance, she felt the warmth of his affection settling in her chest, easing some of the nerves she had about the day ahead.

Lewis reached out and gently took her hand, pulling her up from the sofa. “Come on, let’s get going” he said softly, his thumb lightly brushing over her knuckles in a comforting gesture, Simone glanced down at their joined hands.

Over the past few days, his warm hand was constantly reaching out to hers, to hold it, kiss it softly, or simply rest his fingers against hers in a silent connection. Lewis never left her side for a moment–whether they were sitting in the living room, preparing their food together in the kitchen or even during the quiet moments at night he will always knock on her door to asked if she needed something, then he would fall asleep on her bed while listening to the heartbeat of their child in Simone’s womb. He was always there.

He always asked her constantly If she was okay— “Are you comfortable? Do you need anything? Should I make you something to eat? Mi amor?” Sometimes, it got on her nerves, his hovering, his persistence, and the way he wouldn’t stop fussing over her. What surprised Simone the most was how much she didn’t actually mind.
