Chapter 30
I ran the last distance to the room and quickly got on my knees undoing their bindings. The ropes were rough and tight, but I worked quickly, my hands shaking with urgency. The group of captives—Rick, Daryl, and a few others—looked at me with a mixture of relief and confusion.
"Is everyone okay?" I questioned, glancing up as I worked.
"Yes, now that you're here," Rick answered, his voice strained but grateful. "How did you know we were here?" he questioned, looking at me with a mix of curiosity and concern.
"Carol," was all I said, my focus remaining on freeing Daryl's wrists. I finally finished and grabbed Daryl's wrist, dragging him towards the exit. "Come on, we need to move!"
We reached the exit, but as we pushed against the door, it wouldn't budge. The door was blocked by debris—heavy, solid, and stubborn. My heart sank.
"Motherfucker!" I breathed, frustration boiling over.
"What?" Rick called from farther back, his voice laced with concern.
"Turn back!" I shouted, letting go of Daryl's wrist. I pushed through our group, trying to lead them away from the blocked door. "We need to find another way out!"
I led them through the maze of corridors, my mind racing as I tried to recall the layout of the place Carol described. The air was thick with the stench of sweat and fear, and the distant sounds of Terminus guards searching for us grew louder. We had to move fast.
As we rounded a corner, I saw an alternate exit—a small window high up in the wall. It was a tight squeeze, but it was our best option. I quickly climbed up and managed to push the window open. "This way!" I called out.
Rick and the others helped each other climb up to the window, with Daryl helping to hoist the last of the group through. I was the last one through, pulling myself out and onto the ground outside.
The air outside was cool and damp, a welcome change from the stifling atmosphere inside Terminus. I took a deep breath, surveying the area for any sign of Carol. She had been waiting at the designated meeting spot, a small clearing not far from the camp.
I spotted her a short distance away, her silhouette barely visible against the dimming sky. Relief washed over me as I ran to her, the weight of our escape beginning to sink in.
"Carol!" I shouted, my voice breaking the tension. She turned, her face lighting up with a mix of relief and exhaustion.
"You made it," she said, her voice steady despite the fatigue. "Good job."
I nodded, catching my breath. "We got everyone out, but it was close."
Carol helped guide us away from Terminus, moving quickly and quietly through the underbrush. The weight of our narrow escape pressed on me, but I was glad to see the familiar faces of Rick, Daryl, and the others. We were safe for now, but the threat of Terminus had not completely vanished.
As we moved away from the burning remnants of Terminus, I glanced back one last time, the flames casting long shadows across the wreckage.
