Chapter 11

The next morning, we had to get up for school.

"Hey, we gotta get up for school." Pope said, as he took the beer can tower we made last night and tapped John B's cheek with it. I walked over to the couch and grabbed by backpack from under JJ's pillow. As I pulled it out from underneath, he startled before falling back asleep. 

"Hey, I've gotta pick up Amber. I'll meet you there." I said, as I continued to get my belongings together.

"We have a geometry test in 30 minutes." Pope added, as he continued to wake up John B. John B groaned, as he sat up. "Get up! JJ!" Pope said, as he playfully slapped JJ's face. 

"Kie, you coming with?" I asked, as I offered her a ride with me.

"Yeah, um... I'll meet up with y'all later." She shrugged, as she walked down the hall of the Château. 

"Alright, see y'all there." I said, as I walked out to my car and drove off. 

After I picked Amber up and drove to school, I walked to my first class of the day, which was Spanish. I had that class with Cece and Julie. 

As I was walking to class, I saw Holden from across the hall. I stopped for a second, making eye-contact with him. He saw me, and smiled, before looking over at his friends, who were waiting for him to walk to class. I waved with a smile, as I turned the corner into my own classroom. 

When I walked into the room, I sat down next to Cece, who sat behind Julie.

"Hey girl, you going to the bonfire tonight?" Cece leaned over and whispered.

"Yeah, Holden invited me." I replied.

"Stop! Oh, my God!" Julie squealed. 

"Shh! It's not a big deal." I muttered, as I pulled my notebook out of my backpack. 

"Omg it totally is. That's so exciting!" Cece added. I rolled my eyes. 

"Be quiet!" I laughed. "I'll see y'all there." I smiled.

After class was over, I met up with JJ, Pope and John B to head to biology. 

"Yo, check out what Kenzie gave me." John B said, as he passed a note to JJ. 

"Bonfire?" JJ asked, as he read the note. "Well, I think she meant to give it to me, so we're all good there. We're going." 

"Yeah, I was gonna tell y'all we should. I was invited." I added.

"Invited? By who?" JJ asked. 

"Just, uh... a family friend." I replied. 

"Um... okay." JJ sighed.

"Mr. Heyward, Mr. Routledge, Mr. Maybank, and Ms. Barnes, just the men and woman I wanted to see." Mr. Sunn said, as walked towards the door of the science and history building on our school's campus. 

"Wish I could say the same." JJ sighed, as Mr. Sunn ushered us all towards his classroom. I looked over at Pope and John B, confused as to why Mr. Sunn wanted to see us. 

"I have a question of a historical nature for you all." Mr. Sunn continued. "I digitize documents for the Maritime Museum, and in return, I've been given access to the archives." He said, as he walked over towards a cabinet. "And I found... this." He said, as he places a box on his desk. 

"A box?" Pope asked.

"More than a box." Mr. Sunn replied. 

"That's a good start." Pope muttered. Mr. Sunn opened the box to reveal what appeared to be a book.
