(Sophie's POV) I leaned on the wall of some random store. Sounds of traffic reflected around me. My mother was across the street shopping at some dress store for her already overflowing closet. I had asked to walk around while she shopped, mostly just to get away from the voices.
Whispers and thoughts of people's inner thinking, voices I called them. It gave me constant headaches. Luckily the traffic had overpowered the "voices" for the time-being. In addition, most people were too far for their thoughts to poke into my brain. Suddenly I heard footsteps coming from my left. I turned my head to see four teens, around my age walking towards me. They looked like they should be on a runway, not on the drab streets of New York. I couldn't tell if they were arguing or talking, possibly both. One of the boys, a guy with blond hair and ice blue eyes, caught me staring and threw a wink in my direction.
I turned my head away as my face flushed red. After a minute I looked back, but they had disappeared!? I immediately pushed my body up from the wall and walked over to the spot I had last seen them. There was something off about those teens, but I couldn't place it. Suddenly, I saw one of their figures pass through the store I had been leaning on. Before I could regret anything, I rushed into the store. Immersing myself into one of the shelves I secretly listened into their conversations. The boy who had winked at me was named Keefe. The teal-eyed boy was named Fitz, and I guessed the girl they called Biana was his sister. Finally, the strawberry-blonde haired boy was named Dex. Weird names, I thought. I still had an off feeling from them, yet I couldn't understand why. They were normal people, with strange names, that was all.
I was so engrossed in thought, that I accidentally banged into someone. I fell to the floor with a thump. I looked across from me to see Fitz rubbing his head. "Oh my god! I'm so sorry!" I insisted, quickly standing up. "It's alright." he said as Keefe helped him to his feet. He had an accent, though I couldn't pinpoint what it was, a common occurrence today. The others were watching me, and my cheeks flushed once again. I turned around to head to the door when a group of girls walked in, making me take a step back. Their thoughts felt like little knives stabbing into my brain. I rubbed my temples until the headache had faded. Once I opened my eyes, I saw Fitz eyes boring into mine, he had a pained expression. Then I realized, I couldn't hear his thoughts. Same with his friends, it was silent. I only heard them when they spoke. "Did you hear that." Fitz whispered. No, he couldn't mean.."The voices" He whispered again. I froze, and my reaction gave me away. His friends' eyes narrowed in suspicion, though also confused. "Is everything all right Fitz?" Biana asked moving closer to her brother, almost defensively. Fitz didn't answer and stared into my head. "Are you blocking me?" He asked a few seconds later. "What?" I responded. "It's a way for a telepath to block others." Fitz stated. "Wait is she a telepath?" Dex questioned moving closer to me. I instinctively took a step back. This was all so strange, it had to be dream. "Can you hear my thoughts?" Fitz asked quietly. "N-no." I stammered. "Try!" He shouted. I flinched then closed my eyes. I imagined a hand reaching into his mind, until his "voice" entered my mind. "You've never felt a mind as quiet as mine." I stated, opening my eyes. Fitz eyes widened. "B-ut that's impossible!" he stuttered. Keefe stared at me curiously. I hated their looks and I hated this stupid situation. Air! I needed air! I ran out of the shop as Fitz shouted behind me.
