(SOPHIES POV): The cold winds whipped across my cheek. I tugged my cloak closer to my chest. Keefe huddled next to me. "Why a-re we he-re? He stumbled. I ignored him and looked over the mountain, scanning for traces of the door. "We need to get closer." I stated. I pushed my feet through the thick snow, wishing I had wore the proper shoes. Keefe grabbed my waist and hoisted me into his arms. "What are you doing!?" I shrieked. "Getting us out of this snow." He responded. I felt my cheeks flush. Keefe started to walk closer to the mountain, being careful of the rocks. Soon, we had made it to a cavern. Keefe slowly let me down back onto the ground. I lowered my hood letting the snow brush off as Keefe did the same. "Look for a faint outline of a door." I ordered to Keefe. Keefe nodded back and started tracing the walls. I went to the opposite wall looking for any sign of a door. Just when I was about to give up I felt something wooden underneath my fingers. "Keefe!" I shouted. I heard footsteps approach me and then Keefe was standing by my side. "Is this it?" Keefe asked, breathing heavily. "I think so.." I replied. I pushed the door forward and heard a soft click. The wooden door broke away revealing a metal door with a scanner. My eyes widened. "It's really here!" I shouted, excited. "Sorry to break your excitement but the door needs a fingerprint." Keefe stated, tracing over the scanner. "Access Denied." The scanner spoke. "See." I didn't let this stop me. There had to be a reason I remembered this. I placed my hand onto the scanner. A few seconds passed.
"Access Granted." The scanner spoke. The door opened, revealing a dark hallway. "How.." Keefe started to say. "Ignore it! Let's go!" I yelled. Keefe nodded and we ran into the hallway. The door shut behind us. "Well, there goes our exit." Keefe murmured. I sighed, this task just got a little bit harder. The darkness enveloped the space. I placed my hand on the wall, to help find the hallway. The minutes that past were silent except for the quiet sound of footsteps. More time passed when the hallway opened up. I placed my hand over my eyes as light blinded my senses. Once the familiar feeling had sunk it, I opened my eyes once again. The room looked awful! There was a giant chandelier splattered onto the floor and a hole where it should have been. The room was covered in dark ash marks, almost as if it had been lit on fire. Files were scattered along the floor. I turned to Keefe. "Do you know what happened!?"
"I heard about an attack on one of our bases, but nothing like this.." He responded eying the room. I remembered the words Fitz had said. "Cloaked figures?" Could he have meant that guy I saw with the white eye. This was all getting so confusing! I took a deep breath in. Remember the goal here. I thought to myself. Get the information and get out. "Let's look around." I said. We split up, searching around the room. Most of the files were half charred. Were they trying to destroy the information? I shook my head. Focus on the goal. I saw a file in the corner of my eye. It was the only one I had found that wasn't touched. I slowly opened it. A paper flew out and I barely caught it. The title of the paper was written in big black letters.
PROJECT MOONLARKI felt a pang of recognition, though nothing popped in my head. I read the rest of the paper.
By plotting out specific DNA charts we were able to give the embryo specific abilities. Some of the DNA has been too difficult to translate, this could possibly add on extra abilities. We will soon place this embryo into a human body. The child will grow up in the sea of humans. They will grow a perspective and hopefully help the Elvin world someday. We have given the DNA information to our most trusted Telepath to keep safe in case of accident. We will also plant guardians to watch over the child until they come of age. This could change the course of history.
On the bottom of the page the world "FAILURE" were written in red bold letters. I felt my body trembling and I stopped. Could I be the moonlark? I shook the thought away. No, that's impossible. The project obviously didn't work. I heard Keefe approaching me and I stuffed the paper into my pocket. I turned around. "Find anything?" I asked. "Nothing special, you?" Keefe responded. My hand traced along the paper in my pocket. "Nope." I said, retracting my hand. "I'm sorry we couldn't find, whatever you were looking for." Keefe said, sympathy in his eyes. I looked away, I didn't deserve sympathy for the lie I was committing.
Suddenly a slam ricocheted throughout the room. My eyes widened along with Keefe's. "We need to hide!" I whispered. Keefe motioned to the broken chandelier. "Let's go there!" I nodded and followed Keefe. We shuffled under the chandelier, I felt a glass shard lodge into my knee. I closed my mouth before a gasp could escape. Keefe grasped my hands, helping me pull forward. Finally we were under the chandelier. I laid down on my stomach to peer for people. All of a sudden two figures emerged from the hallway. They were wearing black cloaks with a white eye. Oh no. I thought.
"The others really did a number on this." One figure said in a raspy voice. "Shut up, we just need to get that file." The second figure responded. I decided to call them Raspy and Anger. Raspy flickered in and out as he scanned the mess. A vanisher. "I found a file!" Anger shouted. Raspy ran over to Anger. My eyes widened as I realized the folder they were holding was the one I got the paper in. I held my breath as they opened the file. "It's empty?!" Anger yelled. "Maybe they took it.." Raspy murmured. "Why would they, they think it failed." Anger replied throwing the file onto the ground. Think? Does that mean project moonlark didn't fail?! "Someone's here." Anger stated. I froze. I tightened my grip on Keefe's hand. "Get ready to run." I told Keefe telepathically. I felt Keefe give my hand a tight squeeze. I took it as a yes. I nodded. 3, 2, 1. "GO!" I shouted.
