(SOPHIES POV): The question swirled in my mind. The pieces fit, but this made the problem a whole lot worse. A tiny voice in the back of my head told me to "let the adults handle this" or "the Black Swan can do it!!" But I knew I couldn't trust anyone now. Not even Keefe, though my heart ached not seeing him since that "fiasco". I took a deep breath to calm this new flood of emotions. I stuffed the book into my sweater and walked out of the room.
Edaline was busy browsing downstairs. I tapped her shoulder, and she turned around. "I'm ready to go." I whispered softly. She smiled, "find anything good?" I shrugged. "Maybe next time." She reassured. I nodded and we made our way out of the library.
As we were walking back, I spotted Dex in a store window. "Can we go say hi?" I asked Edaline, pointing to Dex. Edaline eyed the store warily. "You can go, I'll wait outside." I crossed the road to the store. A little bell rang as the door opened. The shops floor was marble, and the shelves contained all types of jewelry including bracelets, earrings, necklaces and others. I waved over to Dex and walked over.
"What are you doing here?" Dex asked. He must not know. I thought. "I was visiting the library and saw you. Why are you here?" I questioned. Dex motioned to a woman in the corner. "My mom." He sighed. I laughed. The woman turned around. My mouth dropped, she looked similar to Edaline. "
"You must be Sophie!" She said, shaking my hand. "Is Edaline around?" "Outside." I responded. Dex's mom smiled, "I'll be right back, stay here." She told Dex. Dex rolled his eyes as she walked out, the bells ringing behind her. "I'm surprised Edaline's out." Dex whispered, scrolling along the shelves.
"What does that mean?" I asked, using my crutches to catch up. Dex turned around to face me. His eyes had turned darker. "A while ago, their daughter died." My eyes widened. "Wait what!"
Dex nodded. "Her name was Jolie, she died in a fire, her boyfriend was with her, survived, and never been the same since then." Fire!? What did the fire look like!? I shouted, then flushed as people glanced over to us. Dex's face turned to confusion. "Why does that matt-" Suddenly Dex's mom burst in, followed by Edaline. "We need to go Sophie, now." Edaline said sternly. I flinched. "Of course." I responded quietly. I gave a smile to Dex and followed Edaline.
The ride back was silent. When we got back to the house, I asked Edaline "Did I do something wrong?" Edaline didn't look at me. "No, I'm sorry, you can go hang out." I backed away slowly, but instead of going back to my room, I went to the second floor. The hallway was dark and empty, I crossed my arms across each other awkwardly. I had never been in this part of the house before. I saw a door slightly ajar and went in. The room was way different than I thought it would be. It was a bedroom, but it looked untouched. There was a nicely made bed, a dresser, closet and others. I spotted a picture and picked it up. Edaline and Grady sat by the sides of a girl. I knew right away this was Jolie. She had the same looks at Edaline. Jealousy steamed inside of me.
I remembered Dex's words. "I'm surprised Edaline's out." Is that why she's been so cold to me. Did I remind her of Jolie!? Tears blurred my eyes, and I wiped them away. I was stupid to think I could just walk into someone's life, and they would accept me. I heard a crash behind me and turned around. Edaline stood spellbound, staring at me. "I'm sorry!" I said, throwing the picture on the ground. I ran out of the room quickly before Edaline could stop me.
Hours Later
I laid on my bed, staring at the ceiling. I heard a knock come from my door. "Come in." I said hoarsely. I sat up in the bed as Grady and Edaline walked inside. I turned away, keeping my arms tightly to my chest. Grady sat down on my left as Edaline on my right. Grady took my hands, making me face him. "Edaline explained what happened." He spoke. I looked away. Grady exhaled. "Sophie, this has been hard on us, ever since.." He stopped midsentence. Edaline's hand rubbed my back softly. "We were wrong, Sophie." I looked up. "We love you Sophie, not because of Jolie." I felt a tear stream down my cheek. I hugged Edaline and Grady tightly. "Thanks..mom and dad." Edaline started crying. "Whatever you need." Grady whispered softly. A smile curled onto my lips. Everything was perfect.
