When the ambulance arrived with Lucy and Tim, two paramedics jumped out immediately and ran to Lucy.
"My name is Lucy Chen, and this is Tim Bradford. We're police officers. He was beaten, and someone injured him with a knife. I don't know what else happened; I couldn't see everything. Please, he just passed out. You have to save him," Lucy explained hysterically and reluctantly stepped aside to give the paramedics room.
"Okay, stay calm. We'll take care of it, but you have to let us do our job," one of the paramedics said calmly while already examining Tim's wounds and his colleague brought the stretcher.
Lucy hated being powerless and leaving it to others to save the situation. She wanted to help; she had brought him into this situation. How foolish they had been to hand these people such a good leverage on a silver platter. They should have seen it coming.
The paramedics had treated the wounds as best as they could for the transport and were now pushing Tim on the stretcher into the ambulance.
"You can ride in the back," said one of the paramedics, who also got in the back to continue treating Tim. Tim lay motionless on the stretcher.
Lucy nodded and hurriedly climbed in.
"Do you have a phone or something? I need to call our supervisor to let him know where we're going," Lucy asked.
The paramedic nodded and handed her a phone, with which Lucy quickly dialed the station's number and asked to be connected to Grey. She explained to him what had happened, mentioning that Harper was already on his way to the drug lab to find anything before the evidence was destroyed. She also reported on Tim's condition and that she would be going with him to the hospital and staying with him. Grey, of course, agreed and instructed her to keep him updated with any news. He would come by later to check on both of them anyway.
When they arrived at the hospital, Tim was immediately taken into surgery. Lucy had no choice but to wait. This must be how Tim had felt after finding her. It was a terrible feeling, this uncertainty, being unable to do anything, despite being police officers who were meant to intervene and take action while others ran away to safety.
She sat in front of the OR for what felt like an eternity, pacing back and forth. She should have been resting herself, but she couldn't; all her thoughts were on Tim and how she would ever thank him for what he had done and risked for her. After an eternity, a doctor came out of the OR with a serious expression and approached Lucy.
"You came in with the officer, right?" he asked first, to which Lucy nodded in agreement. "Your colleague has taken a lot of damage. He had internal bleeding, fractured ribs, and a pretty severe concussion, but he's going to be okay. We managed to treat all his wounds," the doctor explained, causing a huge weight to lift off Lucy's shoulders. Though he undoubtedly had serious injuries, he was going to recover.
"Thank you for saving him," Lucy said with tears in her eyes, relieved.
The doctor smiled gently. "That's my job. I've informed the nurses; they'll bring him to a room soon, and you can go with him and stay there," he said, recognizing within seconds that Lucy wouldn't be leaving Tim alone.
She sat by his bed for hours while Tim slept. At every restless breath, she checked and monitored everything as much as she could. Even though fatigue overwhelmed her repeatedly, she couldn't close her eyes. Suddenly, there was a quiet knock at the door. Tim didn't notice; he was still sleeping. Angela quietly opened the door and came in.
"Hey Lucy. How's he doing?" she asked.
"The doctor said he'll recover. He had internal bleeding, fractured ribs, and a severe concussion. But according to the doctor, nothing that won't heal. He just hasn't woken up yet," Lucy explained briefly, moving aside to make room for Angela.
"Lucy, he'll be fine. Tim is a fighter, and it's not your fault, no matter what happened. It was that gang, not you," Angela said softly and sat next to her. "Harper arrived in time thanks to your call. They managed to secure evidence and arrest some of the gang. We'll see who we have and who got away. But it wasn't for nothing," Angela tried to reassure Lucy.
"At least that's something, but... I shouldn't have put him in that situation. They used him as leverage against me, hurt him just to make me do their job," Lucy said, distressed, with tears rolling down her cheeks again.
Angela gently hugged her. "It's not your fault. It was Tim's decision to come along," Angela said, looking at Tim. "How can I help you, Lucy? Do you need clothes? Something to eat? It looks like you're not going to leave here," she asked.
"I just want him to wake up, but maybe something to drink and a small bite to eat. I don't know if I can eat anything, though," Lucy replied.
Angela nodded and stood up. "Will do, I'll be back soon. I'll call Grey and give an update," Angela said before leaving the room.
A few seconds later, Tim turned his head towards Lucy and moved his lips weakly. Lucy immediately jumped up.
"Tim? Can you hear me?" she asked eagerly. A slight nod.
He slowly opened his eyes and blinked weakly at her.
"Where am I?" he whispered, barely audible.
"At the hospital. You passed out, but you're going to be okay. Everything will be fine. Harper managed to secure evidence and make some arrests," she gushed.
"You did it. You're a real pro, Lucy Chen," he smiled weakly, looking into her eyes. "But promise me, when we get out of here, I want a real date with you. No gangsters, no gangs, no beatings," he smirked lightly, making her smile widely.
"If that's an invitation, I'd love to accept," she replied and leaned down to give him a gentle kiss, just as Angela re-entered the room, causing Lucy to jump up in surprise.
