A long time passed, and Tim and Lucy still hadn't spoken with Grey. Neither of them had found the right moment or the right words. They still hoped that a position might open up for one of them so they could work side by side instead of Tim being Lucy's superior. Grey would hardly be thrilled with their current situation.
Tim and Lucy were getting ready, and Tim had prepared breakfast for both of them. However, after just two bites, Lucy looked pale and stared straight ahead.
"Are you okay?" he asked worriedly, looking at her intently. But Lucy just shook her head and ran to the bathroom, barely making it to the toilet before vomiting. Tim cautiously peeked around the corner.
"What's wrong? Should I call in sick for you today? Maybe you ate something bad?" he pondered, looking concerned. She coughed once more and then turned to Tim from her seated position on the bathroom floor, leaning her back against the bathtub.
"I have no idea what's going on. But I don't want to miss work. I'll see how it goes, and if necessary, I'll go home early," she replied, standing up slowly with Tim immediately coming to support her.
"You know that's a bad idea, right? You're not well, and it's pointless to go on patrol like this," Tim cautioned her.
"I know, I'll talk to Angela to see if she needs someone in the office," Lucy considered, and Tim nodded slightly. He knew she was stubborn and wouldn't change her mind, so a day at the desk was better than being out on the street in her condition.
When they arrived at the station, they said goodbye to each other, and Tim reminded Lucy once again to let him know if she felt worse and needed to go home. She nodded and promised him she would take it easy.
"Hey Angela, I'm not feeling too well today. Can I help you with something here so I don't have to be out on the street?" Lucy asked Angela.
"That works perfectly today. I have a big research project you can help with. I'll give you the materials and explain everything, go ahead and sit down, I'll be right with you," Angela replied.
Lucy went to her desk and started her computer. She felt nauseous again. What was wrong with her today? She hurried to the bathroom, and when she returned, Angela was already at her desk, looking a bit worried.
"Are you okay, Lucy?" she asked.
"Yeah, I don't know. I feel so nauseous today, I keep throwing up, but I didn't eat anything bad," Lucy explained, sitting down at her desk. "I even felt sick this morning when Tim made breakfast and I smelled it," she continued. Angela thought for a moment and then looked at Lucy with wide eyes, sitting down next to her so others couldn't hear their conversation.
"Lucy," she began, "could it be that you and Tim, well, didn't take precautions?" she asked cautiously. Lucy looked at her with wide eyes.
"Crap," Lucy whispered, thinking. "I always take my pill, I'm really careful, but after I got injured and was in the hospital... I was given medication and maybe it interfered with the pill's effectiveness, which no one told me," she pieced together the situation. "What should I do now, Angela?" she asked, desperate and with tears in her eyes, overwhelmed with emotions and thoughts.
"Okay, Lucy. Stay calm. I'll go get a test, you can take it, and I'll stay with you if you want, to make sure no one interrupts. Then you'll have certainty and we can go from there. I'll help you with everything, I promise," Angela reassured her. Lucy nodded and looked at Angela gratefully for not leaving her alone in this moment.
Angela stood up and left the room, returning some time later with a bag she handed to Lucy.
"Thank you, will you come with me? I want to know right away," Lucy said to Angela, who nodded understandingly and went with her to the bathrooms.
Lucy had never taken a test before and had to read the instructions before doing it. Angela waited outside until Lucy came out to the anteroom. Lucy handed the test to Angela, who looked at the result. A plus sign appeared on the display, and Lucy's eyes filled with tears again.
"Angela... how is this going to work? I mean, Tim just became a sergeant and I'm still figuring out what I want. Grey doesn't know about us, and I don't even know if Tim wants kids. We haven't talked about it. We wanted to take things slow..." she explained to Angela, who immediately hugged her and gently stroked her back before looking into her eyes.
"I've known Tim for a long time. Even though he can be a barking dog on the outside, deep down he's an incredibly caring and protective man. When his ex-girlfriend told him she didn't want kids, he accepted it, but you could see a part of him shattered. He's always wanted a family, I think. The family he didn't have as a child. You should talk to him tonight, he deserves to know. You two are an incredibly strong team, Lucy. You'll get through this and be the kind of parents any child would dream of. And we'll handle Grey, trust me, family comes first for him too," Angela reassured Lucy.
"Thank you, Angela, really, I don't know what I would have done alone right now, but you're right. And Tim is my dream man. I'll talk to him tonight. Now I just have to get through the shift," Lucy concluded.
"Just take it easy, do what you can, and what you can't, you can't. You need to take care of you two," Angela smiled and accompanied Lucy back to the desk after they had wiped away their tears.
