The next morning, when Lucy woke up, she looked beside her, but Tim wasn't there. Had she dreamed it all? Imagined the kiss and confessing her feelings to him? She heard a quiet clatter, which must have been Tim. She carefully got up and padded barefoot from the bedroom into the living room, where she saw Tim already preparing breakfast.

"Good morning," she greeted him with a smile.

He turned around, slightly startled, and smiled back when he looked into her eyes.

"Good morning," he greeted her, too, and placed a second plate on the table. "Breakfast is almost ready. I hope I didn't wake you. I tried to be quiet," he said.

"No, you didn't. It was wonderful falling asleep next to you," she smiled and walked over to give him a kiss.

He wrapped an arm around her and bent down to give her a loving kiss.

"I already talked to Harper this morning. She knows you're here with me. I had informed Grey and discussed everything. He must have passed it on to her. They still don't know who did this to you. We can't be sure those involved belong to our target cartel. Also, we can't prove what happened at the moment," he said sadly. "The guy they found at the motel was just a lackey. He's been involved with various gangs and groups and has tangled with different people. But no one can say who he was with last," he explained further.

She pulled away from his arm and looked at him. "Does that mean I'm stuck here with you, like in a golden cage, because apparently, everyone's incapable of finding any evidence?! That must be a joke. I can describe exactly who threw me off the yacht."

"Calm down, Lucy," he began. "You know as well as I do that we want nothing more than to find the culprits, okay? But you also know that's not enough. We need evidence, traces, direct access. Something stronger," he tried to explain rationally.

She turned away from him, shaking her head. "So I was almost killed for nothing! Okay, then I'll go back, say he tried to kill me, and I panicked and had to go underground before I could continue."

"That's suicide, Lucy. Do you think they're stupid? They'll think you talked to the police and made a deal. There's no way I'm letting you go out there alone again," he insisted.

"Then come with me," she said with a shrug.

"I need to discuss that with Grey. I can't just go underground and show up somewhere undercover. That's not how it works," he explained, hoping Lucy would come to her senses.

"Then do it, but I can't just sit here twiddling my thumbs and waiting. I have to get out there and do something."

Tim grabbed his phone and called Grey's number. He knew Lucy wouldn't wait. She wasn't made to leave the work to others, even if what she was planning was almost suicidal.

After a conversation with Grey, which apparently involved a lot of back-and-forth, as Lucy could see, Tim put the phone down and looked at her seriously.

"He agrees. He's strictly against it, but he understands that a solo mission won't work. We'll insert me as your boyfriend, who's just been released from prison and whom you sought refuge with, especially given the circumstances. The papers will be ready this afternoon, then we can get started," he said, looking far from happy about the decision. But it was the only way he had a chance to protect Lucy. At least this way, there was a small chance she'd come back alive.

"You know you don't have to do this, right?" Lucy asked.

"I know, but I can't let you go alone after what happened. As your boyfriend undercover, I might have a small chance to help you survive," he replied.

"But... why would they let you live?" she asked cautiously. "I mean, I'm supposed to make drugs, but you? In the story, you have no value to them, right?"

"First of all, Grey knows nothing about what happened last night. The kiss and everything stays between us for now. He wouldn't let me in as an objective partner if he knew. So, that's the first thing. And to answer your question, Grey said he'd give me a fitting story. I'm supposed to have big contacts abroad, a plane can be arranged, etc. Grey wants to pull out all the stops if necessary," Tim explained.

Lucy nodded slowly, hoping they'd buy their story. So far, a boyfriend hadn't played much of a role, but it had to work. Tim wouldn't let her go alone.

Even though neither of them felt like eating, Tim urged Lucy to at least eat some of the pancakes he had made for her.

"Thank you for everything you're doing for me," she said at some point to break the silence. "I never imagined it would be like this. And I wish we could get to know each other better on this dating level normally. I'm sorry if I'm ruining that," she apologized.

"You're not ruining anything, Lucy. I understand why you have to do this. You want your freedom back, your life. If these people remain free, you're always in danger, you can never sleep without fear. I understand that. And I think if we get through this and survive, there can't be a greater test. Of course, it's a bit unfortunate that it's happening right after we both realized there's more between us, but at least we're not wasting time," he tried to lighten the tense situation.

She smiled softly and leaned against him.

"Sometimes I forget you have a sense of humor," she chuckled, to which he snorted derisively and shook his head.

"Very funny. But now, let's talk a bit more about how this is supposed to go down when we go back, okay? I want to at least feel like we might survive this whole mess," Tim redirected the conversation to the actual topic.

Any Ideas what could happen to them undercover? :)
