The transformation

Originally, Walt wanted to put Dopey from Snow White in what he considered to be 'the ultimate Silly Symphony'.

However, he was also really concerned about Mickey Mouse's future in cinema. 

So instead, Walt thought he'd make Mickey star in a short film where the classical piece The Sorcerer's Apprentice tells the story.

And from the looks of things, he made the right decision.
