[1991, a HYDRA base in a snowy landscape. A man enters a bunker and removes a red book marked with a black star.]
"Ah," Bucky says as he and Gabrielle stand up. "We should uhh... probably go."
"Oh, right," Steve says and his eyes widen. "That would be a good idea."
"Call us when the scene is over!" Gabrielle says with fake enthusiasm before dragging Bucky out of the hall. The magicals look confused.
[A technician raises a cylindrical chamber, revealing Bucky Barnes, aka the Winter Soldier.]
[Bucky Barnes is secured in a chair, a mechanical device on either side of his head causing him to scream in pain.]
Vasily Karpov: [speaking Russian] Желание. Ржавый. Семнадцать. Рассвет. Печь. Девять. Добросердечный. Возвращение на родину. Один. Грузовой вагон. ([subtitled] Longing. Rusted. Seventeen. Daybreak. Furnace. Nine. Benign. Homecoming. One. Freight car.) Доброе утро, Солдат. ([subtitled] Good morning, Soldier.)
"Are those... trigger words?" Remus asks in horror.
"Unfortunately," Nat sighs. "Whoever speaks them gains control over the Winter Soldier and Winter Witch." People from both sides of the magical war have sparkles in their eyes at the thought of controlling two of the deadliest assassins in the world.
Shuri was writing something down in a notebook. "I am currently trying to figure out a way to get the words out of their heads, so don't get any ideas," she says as if reading everyone's minds. (Maybe she did. We may never know.)
[Bucky Hesitates]
Bucky Barnes: Я готов отвечать. ([subtitled] Ready to comply.)
Vasily Karpov: У меня есть для тебя миссия. Санкционируй и Извлекай. Без свидетелей. ([subtitled] I have a mission for you. Sanction and extract. No witnesses.)
[Night. A car is driving down a dirt road alone. The Winter Soldier is waiting at the side of the road with his motorcycle. As the car passes, the Winter Soldier follows. He comes alongside the car and disables it. It slams into a tree. The Winter Soldier brings the motorcycle back around and climbs off. He walks to the car trunk and rips it open, revealing a silver case containing several blue packets]
"Oh, good, we started with this," Tony says bitterly with a hint of grief.
[Back at the HYDRA base]
Vasily Karpov: Отлично, Солдат. ([subtitled] Well done, Soldier.)
"Pete, go get Gabrielle and Bucky," Tony says to the teen, and he nods before running out of the hall. Soon, the assassins were back in the room.
[Lagos, present day]
"This mission," Steve says tiredly as he rubs a hand on his face.
"This is where it all went to shit," Sam agrees.
"We aren't blaming you, Wanda, it wasn't your fault," Nat says when she sees the other woman look down in shame.
[Wanda Maximoff, aka Scarlet Witch, adds sugar to a cup and stirs it. She looks around.]
Steve Rogers: [on radio] All right, what do you see?
Wanda Maximoff: Standard beat cops. Small station. Quiet street. It's a good target.
Steve Rogers: There's an ATM in the south corner, which means...
Wanda Maximoff: Cameras.
