You're comforting him - as your academic rival

The rain was fading to a light drizzle as Jungkook and I left the library. We strolled together in silence to my house, the sound of our footsteps blending with the gentle patter of falling rain. Anxiety and adrenaline mixed together to make my heart race. I hoped that my spontaneous decision to invite Jungkook over was the right one.

After we got there, I took a minute to fumble with my keys and open the door. I tried to lighten the atmosphere by saying, "Welcome to my humble home" Shaking off all the water in his hair, Jungkook came inside with an approving smile.

"Cozy" he said, taking a quick glance around the fairly sized but tastefully furnished living area. I placed our bags on the coffee table and guided him over to the couch.

"Make yourself at home. I'll get us some towels and something warm to drink" I said, walking to the restroom. When I came back, Jungkook was seated and appeared more relaxed. I gave him a steaming hot chocolate mug and a towel.

He wrapped the towel around his shoulders and took a sip of the drink before saying, "Thank you" We both warmed up, and a relaxed stillness fell between us.

I finally brought up the topic that had been on my mind ever since we left the library after a short while. "Jungkook, about your previous confession... I want you to know that you have the right to choose your own friends, even if I know it's not my duty. Even though your parents may have good intentions, they cannot always control who you spend time with"

With a confused expression, he glanced down at his mug. "Y/n, it's not that easy. My parents have always held me to a high standard. It's difficult to disagree with them since they believe they know what is best"

I moved a bit closer to him in an attempt to comfort him. "I understand. However, there are moments when you have to defend your rights and your happiness. Even if your choices conflict with their wishes, you are free to choose your own"

With a sigh, Jungkook leaned on the sofa. "You're right, of course. Simply said, I've always made an effort to meet their standards. Letting them down seems like a failure"

I put my hand on his arm and squeezed it comfortingly. "You aren't failing. It's okay to want to be independent and make your own decisions. It is a part of maturing. And in this, you're not by yourself. Even if they're not the friends your parents approve of, you have friends who genuinely care about you" His eyes softened as he turned to face me. "You really think so?"

"Yes" I replied strongly. "And if your parents don't see this, it's their loss. Jungkook, you're a truly amazing individual. To have you as a friend would be an honor for everyone" A tiny grin pulled at his mouth. "Thank you, Y/n. It means a lot coming from you" I returned the smile, a wave of warmth flowing through my chest. "Anytime. That is what friends are for, right?"

For a while, we just talked and got to know one another better in that way. Considering that we had always been rivals, it felt unreal. On the other hand, it appeared that something new and significant was about to happen.

At some point, we took out the assignments and got to work on them together. There was a peaceful silence in its aftermath, since the storm outside had mostly passed. Jungkook appeared more relaxed and I was glad that I could make him feel better about his circumstances. The longer the evening went on, the more I realized how much had changed so quickly. I'd gone from being rivals with Jungkook to being friends, and perhaps more.

Jungkook looked to me at the door when it was time for him to go, and he appeared serious. "Y/n, thanks for tonight. This was incredibly helpful to me" With a pleasant flutter in my chest, I smiled. "Jungkook, anytime. Here, you're always welcome" With a sincere look on his face, he nodded. "I'll see you tomorrow?"

"Yes" I answered.

I watched him go, feeling optimistic about what was to come. Even though I knew we'd be okay because of each other's support, I knew that the storm in our hearts would pass quickly.
