She ran to the kitchen where Riley and Lyla were. "Is AJ here? Didn't her work end like a hour ago?" Sydney anxiously asked her sister. "She said she will be here in 5, why?" Riley asked. "No reason!" Sydney said, running towards the front door. Of course Sydney loved both of her sisters but she always felt closer with AJ, about talking about stuff. AJ had great advice and understood Sydney's problems. She also already knew about the whole Paige thing so it was easier.
Sydney ran out to the driveway, watching AJs jeep pull in. She ran up to it, and opened the door, the car still running. "Wha-" AJ went to say but got interrupted by Sydney hugging her. "I need help" Sydney said pulling away. "Jeez missed you too!" AJ said sarcastically. Sydney gave her a look, "okay not the right time to joke around, got it" AJ rolled her eyes.
"Paige and me just had the best day ever, like it truly felt how it felt back in high school, two best friends, hanging out, on a summer day. But then I walked into her room to borrow clothes for my date tonight and she got all pissed at me and started a fight" "hold! You have a date tonight?! Go Syd!" AJ cheered, Sydney gave her another annoyed look. "Wait do you not want to go on this date?" AJ asked "that's not the point right now, the point is Paige gets so pissed whenever I bring a boys name up and this time I called her out for it and she just got even more mad at me." "Hm well, true friends should always celebrate your wins, and I'm not saying Paige isn't a true friend, I'm saying I think she's more than just a friend" AJ hinted to the clueless girl.
"Wdym?" Sydney asked. "Omg Syd, what did she say to you" "she told me she had the best day with me and that she hasn't laughed like that since high school and she felt like I was ditching her for some guy. Then I told her she needs to stop getting so mad whenever I bring a guys name up and she was like 'isn't it completely fucking obvious?' and I was just like wdym, like cause what does that mean, and then she was like never mind and dropped the conversation" Sydney huffed, looking at her older sister. "Oh and we were on the paddle board together and got lost in some deep conversation and she told me she was gay and I was clueless for not knowing" "ya well you are clueless, that's for sure" AJ said, tying her hair up.
"Why does everyone keep saying that?" Sydney huffed. "Syd, you're obviously blind, Paige is in love with you, like in love in love. She has been since high school, and everyone can tell. The way her eyes light up when she sees you, I can't believe you can't see it. She's mad whenever you bring up a guy cause she's jealous. She wishes it was her that you are going on a date with. She is waiting for you to realize it, that's why she said 'isn't it obvious'." AJ told the girl.
Sydney couldn't believe the words coming out of her sisters mouth. Could it be true? Paige Bueckers in love with her? "I don't know AJ" Sydney said, uneasy about the whole situation. "Ok Syd, believe what you want, now I'm starving so I'm gonna head inside" AJ said, patting Sydney's lap, then opening the car door.
Sydney joined her, walking inside, she headed to the guest room and continued getting ready for her date tonight. Alough she really just felt like staying here with her family, sitting around the fire, she couldn't ditch Ryan, this last minute, that would be rude. Sydney played with the 'Buster' bracelet that the boys made for her, could AJ be right?
A hour later there was a knock at the door, thank god Lyla and Riley answered it and not someone else. Sydney didn't have the energy to explain. Sydney ran down the stairs, running to grab her purse. "Bye love you" Sydney yelled to Riley as she slammed the door behind her. "Hey, you look amazing!" Ryan said, opening the car door for her. "Thanks, you aswell" Sydney smiled. She may look like she wanted to be with him, on the date, but in reality, she wanted nothing to do with him.
They made their way to the restaurant, they placed their drink orders and sat in awkward silence. "So, what were you up to today?" Ryan asked, trying to make conversation. Sydney zoned out, not listening to a word he was saying. "Sydney?" Ryan shook the girl out of her thoughts. "Sorry, what did you say?" Sydney asked. The boy laughed, repeating what he had said a moment ago "what did you do today?" "Oh uh me and Paige had a lake day" Sydney said, her voice breaking when she said the girls name. "Cool" Ryan said as he picked at his nails.
"I'm sorry, I'm not ever the type of girl to do this but, I have to leave" Sydney said getting up and placing money down for her drink. "Is everything alright?" Ryan asked. Sydney felt horrible, the guy actually looked concerned. "Ya ya, thanks for tonight" before Ryan could say anything, Sydney was out the door. She walked back to the Bueckers house, beating herself up on the way.
"Back so soon?" Paige voice said as Sydney walked through the side door of the home. Sydney could have sworn that everyone would be outside, hanging around the fire, but for some reason Paige was inside, sitting on the couch. "Uh ya, I just couldn't do it" Sydney admitted.
"P, can, can we talk?" Sydney whispered, playing with her rings. Paige noticed her actions, "ya" Paige said softly, walking out to the dock. Sydney followed the girl, the trees easily hiding the dock from the house. Paige sat down on the end of the dock, near the boat, she patted the seat next to her and looked back at Sydney.
The sat in comfortable silence for a minute before Sydney decided to speak up. "Paige Madison, you're my best friend, in every universe, no matter what, and nothing will ever change that. As my best friend, you should support me no matter what. And I feel like you haven't supported me about my decision with who I date. For example tonight, you got all mad cause I was going on a date. Another example, my ex from junior year, that you basically made him break up with me. I just don't get it, why? Why can't you just be happy for me?" Sydney let out.
Paige looked at her, "Sydney I try to be happy for you about that stuff, but, I just can't." Paige whispers. "Why though, best friends should be happy for each other no matter how small the celebration is" Sydney sniffed. Paige could tell how hurt she was, it was time to tell her, she could hurt the girl or hold it in any longer. "Cause Sydney! Isn't it obvious? Sydney Kay Williams, I'm in love with you! I have been since the first time I saw you walk into Mrs. Keefes home room in freshman year. You're all I think about, every day, every night. I have tried to lose my feelings for you cause I know you don't like girls like that and I'm your bsf but no matter how hard I try, you just have this special spark to you that nobody else has. Im addicted to you and I don't regret that night I kissed you at my going away party or any time I have kissed you. I can't hold my love in any longer." Paige let out, Paige felt like a brick was lifted off of her shoulders.
AJ was right.
