joshua's pov:
after school was over, i drove home with a huge grin plastered on my face.
i thought about all the other kids doing drugs and smoking...
but i would never need that.
penelope was my drug.
and i was the old addict, blissfully unaware of the world burning around me.
sigh.
my phone buzzed when i reached a stop sign and i picked it up.
kyle: ayo bro come pick me up from subway, me and mason need a ride home
i tapped on the keyboard and resumed driving.
joshua: yea omw homie :3
i quickly arrived at the subway and unlocked the backseat as they filed in.
we remained quiet for most of the drive.
but at one point, i adjusted my mirror and saw their contrasting skin connecting, their hands laced together.
i pretended that i didn't see it, just to not make it awkward.
finally, we reached mason's house and he scooted out of the car, flashing a warm smile at kyle.
he slammed the door and i kept driving down the road.
"so...what was that?" i asked.
"what?" he said, confused.
"you and mason huh?"
"oh...yeah." he let loose and let a smile spread across his face, his eye bags contradicting the whole emotion.
"man that's awesome. good for y'all."
"thanks. i'm sorry i didn't tell you sooner."
"nah nah nah it's just fine, kyle. i'm happy for you guys." i said as we pulled into his driveway.
"thanks josh. i appreciate it." he reached for the door but i stopped him.
"hey...what was stephanie talking about when she said "our deal"?" i said with a chuckle to lighten the mood.
"uh...nothing. bye!" he ripped the door open and scurried into his house.
dammit.
oh well.
i backed out of the driveway and slowly watched the neighborhood drift away behind me as i drove.
i didn't even realize where i was going. it became night faster than ever and i was surrounded by vegetation on a winding road.
out of nowhere, a deer came bounding out of the trees and i swerved off the road.
and then
i felt numb
noises around me
yet it felt so silent
then
it went dark.
