"Taehyung, tell me what happened to you?" Jimin asked worriedly when he found his friend hunched over the bathroom sink, throwing up. Taehyung was gasping for breath, his hands gripping the commode as he wiped his mouth with the tissue Jimin handed him.
"I... I'm fine," Taehyung muttered, his voice weak.
"No, you’re not," Jimin said firmly, his concern deepening as he helped Taehyung stand up.
"Jimin—"
"No, Taehyung. You need to see a doctor and get checked out," Jimin insisted, his tone leaving no room for argument.
"I don’t need—"
"I’ve been seeing you these past few days, Taehyung. You look so weak," Jimin cut in, not letting him brush it off.
"It’s just... stress," Taehyung muttered, feeling a knot form in his stomach.
"Just go for a checkup, Taehyung!" Jimin urged, his eyes filled with worry.
Sighing, Taehyung finally relented, knowing Jimin wasn’t going to let this go. He agreed to go to the doctor, though he wasn’t sure what would come of it. The past month had been difficult—constant nausea, fatigue, and even fainting spells.
He’d tried to convince himself it was just the change in weather, something he could shake off, but deep down, he knew it was something more. He didn’t want to worry anyone, so he kept quiet, pushing through it.
---
Later that afternoon, Taehyung called Soo Hee to let her know he wouldn’t be able to pick her up as planned. She, too, suggested he visit a doctor, but he brushed it off. As always, Soo Hee was kind, and she didn’t press him further.
Sitting in the waiting area at the hospital, Taehyung’s nerves were on edge. A nurse came to call him, and he stood up, following her into a room. To his surprise, when he entered, the doctor was none other than Mrs. Jeon, Jungkook's mother.
"Taehyung?" she said, looking up from her desk, clearly surprised. "What are you doing here?"
"Mrs. Jeon...?" Taehyung stammered, caught off guard.
She smiled warmly and nodded. "Yes, it’s me. Please, come in and take a seat." She gestured to the chair in front of her desk.
Taehyung hesitated for a moment but then walked over and sat down, feeling a wave of nervousness wash over him.
"So, Mr. Kim, what seems to be the problem?" Mrs. Jeon asked, shifting into a more professional tone.
"I’ve been feeling unwell for a while now," Taehyung explained, his voice quiet. "I keep throwing up, get really tired easily, my body aches, and I feel like I need to urinate more often than usual... I’m scared it’s an infection."
Mrs. Jeon listened attentively, nodding thoughtfully. She could tell by his symptoms what might be going on, but she took her time before speaking, not wanting to jump to conclusions too quickly.
"Alright, let’s do a quick checkup," she said, standing up. She gestured for Taehyung to lie on the examination table.
After a brief examination, Mrs. Jeon smiled reassuringly. "You’re physically fine, Mr. Kim."
Taehyung let out a sigh of relief, though something still lingered in his mind. "Then... why do I feel like this?" he wondered aloud.
Mrs. Jeon paused before asking a question that caught him completely off guard. "Can I ask you something personal?"
Taehyung blinked, unsure where this was going. He nodded cautiously.
"Do you have a boyfriend?" Mrs. Jeon asked, her tone still professional but with a hint of concern.
Taehyung froze. He hadn’t expected this question. His mind immediately went to Bogum, but he hadn’t properly broken things off with him yet. "N-no, I don’t have a boyfriend," he replied, unsure if he was lying or telling the truth.
"Are you... sexually attracted to anyone?" she asked, her gaze steady.
Taehyung’s heart skipped a beat. He knew where this was leading, and he looked down nervously. "Y-yes, I have... had sex," he admitted, though his voice faltered.
Mrs. Jeon nodded, understanding. "Then, Mr. Kim... you need to take a pregnancy test."
Taehyung's world seemed to tilt on its axis. "A... pregnancy test?" he echoed in shock.
Mrs. Jeon passed him a small test kit, directing him to the restroom. "Yes, please. It’s necessary."
Shaking, Taehyung took the kit from her, his mind spinning. Once inside the bathroom, he locked the door and stood in front of the mirror, his hands trembling. His mind raced as he followed the instructions, his heart hammering in his chest. He had never imagined something like this happening to him.
He lowered his gray pants, still dressed in his office attire, and nervously followed the instructions. Carefully, he added a few drops of urine to the pregnancy test kit, his hands trembling as he awaited the results.
He stood there, staring at the results. Two red lines. He swallowed hard, the weight of it all crashing down on him. Slowly, he returned to the room, the test kit still in his hand.
Mrs. Jeon quickly took the kit from him and examined it. Her face softened as she smiled gently at him. "Taehyung... congratulations."
Taehyung stood motionless, his eyes fixed on the floor, tears welling up in his eyes. His whole world felt like it was falling apart, and yet, there was also something inside him, a small spark of something he couldn’t quite place.
"Taehyung," Mrs. Jeon said softly, reaching out to place a comforting hand on his arm. "I think you already knew this, didn’t you?"
Taehyung didn’t answer. He simply let the tears fall, overwhelmed by the rush of emotions. Mrs. Jeon wrapped her arms around him in a gentle hug, offering him the warmth and comfort he desperately needed.
In that moment, Taehyung realized the truth. He was carrying a child. A rare and extraordinary circumstance, something that most people didn’t know was possible. And though it terrified him, there was a part of him that was also deeply moved. This was his child, no matter what.
---
When Taehyung returned home, Soo Hee was watching TV. She asked about his health, and once again, Taehyung lied, telling her he was fine. He didn’t have the courage to tell her the truth, not yet. He couldn’t bear the thought of her, or anyone, looking at him differently.
"Uncle," Soo Hee said, breaking his thoughts.
"Yes?" Taehyung replied quietly, his mind elsewhere.
"Tomorrow is my birthday," she said, her voice bright with excitement. "Can I invite my friends over?"
"Sure, if you want," Taehyung said softly.
Soo Hee eagerly listed the names of her friends, including Jungkook, and Taehyung’s heart stopped for a moment. Hearing Jungkook’s name brought a rush of emotions—fear, guilt, and something he didn’t want to confront.
The teenager hadn’t been around since their last encounter, and Taehyung was thankful for that. But now, with Soo Hee inviting him to her birthday, he couldn’t help but feel his anxiety rise.
His hand instinctively moved to his stomach. He was two weeks pregnant now, and as much as he feared what others might think, this was his child. And he would protect it, no matter what.
"I can’t tell him," Taehyung whispered to himself, his fingers tracing his belly. "I can’t tell anyone."
