"Am I dead?"
The bright light in front of Yuju blinded her. She wanted to open her eyes and look around to see what heaven looked like. It couldn't have been hell, because then the light would have been red and Yuju would have felt hot.
"No, not yet," Yuju heard her doctor say. The bright light in front of her disappeared and now she could see the room she was in. In the hospital.
She was lying on a bed and there were a few cables connected to her. She looked to the side and saw the screen that showed her heart rate. So she wasn't dead after all.
Yuju sat up and looked at her doctor, Mr. Sim, who was sitting on a chair next to her bed. Yuju now wanted to know how and why she was suddenly in a hospital room.
"An old lady found you unconscious on the sidewalk next to the Han River yesterday at 8:30 p.m. She called the ambulance and you slept for a full 10 hours," Mr. Sim told her.
"Was I close to dying?" Yuju wanted to know.
"No, the incident was harmless. But we need to monitor your heart more closely now, otherwise these incidents could happen more often and then it wouldn't be harmless anymore," he explained to her. Yuju nodded blankly.
"You can go back to school tomorrow, and you'll be prescribed new medication. One more thing I wanted to ask: have you been exercising in the last few days?"
Yuju hesitated.
"I was sprinting along the Han River just before it happened," she muttered clearly. The doctor looked at her with disappointment.
"Yuju, you can't do any sports right now. You could die at any second. Your heart is getting weaker every day, it's very serious," the doctor warned her. Yuju nodded and was angry with herself.
He stood up, bowed to Yuju, and said, "I'll let Jaeyun know that it's best for you to take the rest of the week off."
Yuju nodded. He always had to mention his son somewhere in the conversation. But before Mr. Sim left, he turned to Yuju.
"Come and have lunch with us sometime, my wife would love to meet you," he smiled warmly at her. She nodded and Mr. Sim left.
Yuju let herself fall back onto the pillow. Mr. Sim was already acting as if she were his daughter-in-law. But Yuju was not attracted to Jaeyun at all. Sure, he was nice, but he just wasn't her type. Besides, she was still a minor and he was 23.
She lay in bed for a few more minutes before leaving. On her way home, her doctor's words ran through her mind.
"You could die at any second."
"Your heart is getting weaker every day."
Saddened, Yuju stopped in front of her apartment door. Was there any point in her living at all? She could just go to sleep tonight and not wake up the next day. Or if she went inside now, she could just collapse and die.
She opened the apartment door and went straight to her room to avoid contact with her sister. She sat down at her desk and searched for her cell phone in her jacket pocket.
5 missed messages from Lee Heeseung
Yuju scratched her head and opened her chat.
Lee Heeseung:
Where are you? 8:01
Invisible girl! 9:12
1. Break, where's my sushi! 9:57
There will be consequences... 9:59
Are you dead? 12:47
Yuju laughed and read through all the messages again. Starting today, she was supposed to bring Heeseung sushi.
"What if he shows the photo now?" Suddenly, Yuju was full of adrenaline. She added a few things up. If he wants to show the photo, he'll do it tomorrow. What could she do to avoid it?
Then Yuju had an idea and she quickly left the apartment.2
