It was just before sunrise. Seoul slept peacefully. A few street lamps were already shining. Some stronger, some weaker. The fresh late summer wind blew through a girl's hair.
Kirai Yuju was sitting on the roof of a high-rise building. She was small, around 1.60m, slim and half Korean, half Japanese. Her boxy hair blew in the air. Her green eyes stood out the most from her face. They always sparkled dark green at night.
Whenever she couldn't sleep, which is the case every day, she usually goes up the 30 steps of her high-rise building to the roof and observes the Silent City. She likes the silence because she is an introvert and not particularly social. She also enjoys it when it's quiet in Seoul, which is not the case most of the time.
But these advantages are nothing compared to disadvantages. Yuju has insomnia, which limits her to sleepless nights and she has also had a sick heart since birth. She knows that she could die at any second, no matter what happens. It was just before sunrise. Seoul was sleeping deeply. A few street lamps were already shining. Some stronger, some weaker. The fresh late summer wind was blowing through a girl's hair.
She likes the silence because she is introverted and not particularly social. Moreover, she enjoys when it's quiet in Seoul, which is mostly not the case.
Her phone showed 6:01 and she went back into the high-rise building. She quietly strolled up to the 3rd floor where her apartment was located. She lived there with her 25-year-old, reckless sister Yuria. Both of their parents died when Yuju was just 2 years old. They had a car accident and lost their lives. They worked for a very large company named Mr. joomy, a very influential man from South Korea.
After their death, the two sisters were left with 200 million won.Until her sister Yuria turned 18, Yuju and she lived with their aunt. However, she showed little interest in the two of them, which is why she bought them a small apartment in the shadows of Seoul, in an unknown neighborhood. When Yuria turned 18, Yuju was only 10 and she mostly had to take care of herself.Yuria loved going out and buying expensive things. And so she quickly spent the 100 million won that belonged to her. Yuria did not study; instead, she worked at a stripclub.
Yuju still goes to school and at the same time works in a café, where she earns significantly more than her sister, but she won't tell her. Yuju also still has her 100 million won. She only spends her earned money on food and clothing. Her aunt covers all the electricity costs only on one condition: that she would never see the two of them again.
Yuju and Yuria also have a not-so-good relationship. Most of the time, they avoid each other. Yuria never liked Yuju because she believes that her parents died because of her.
Tired, Yuju opened the apartment door and went inside. In the living room, which is right next to the entrance along with the kitchen, her sister was sleeping on the sofa. Yesterday, she returned home drunk from a party around half-past midnight. It was already bad enough for Yuju to help Yuria into the apartment and then to dispose of her vomit.Yuju made herself tea and took her medication beforehand. These medications should help a little bit the girls heart, what shows because she is still alive.
"Ahh Wonlin..." Yuria was talking to him in her sleep. Yuju was already used to hearing about Yuria's one-night stands or guys she had met at clubs. It wasn't uncommon for Yuria to bring guys to their apartment and for Yuju to catch them making out. Yuju washed her cup and put it in the cupboard. She went to the bathroom and got ready. She wore her long hair down every day, mostly to cover her face, which was actually very pretty.
Yuju hated attention. She put on a pair of blue jeans, a white T-shirt, and a red zip-up hoodie. Although there was still a uniform school rule, no one at her school followed it, and the teachers were also no longer interested in checking every day whether everyone was in uniform. Yuju packed her backpack in her room. She needed paper to write on, pens, a water bottle, and her medication. Her phone was always in her pocket.
Before she left her room, she tidied it up briefly and went out. Her room is small but nice. Next to the door is her desk, and opposite that is her bed, with her wardrobe on the right side of the bed. Otherwise, she has shelves full of books for school in her room. Yuju is the top of her class, but few know that because no one in her class notices her.
Before Yuju left the apartment, she hesitated and tried to wake her sister. If she didn't do it, it would be her fault that Yuria would be late for work and earn less money.
"Get lost, you little rat," Yuria cursed and rolled off the sofa onto the floor. Yuju didn't give her another second of attention and moved out of the apartment towards school.
Her way to school took about a quarter of an hour. School always started at 8 o'clock, and Yuju always left at 6:30 so that she would have enough time and wouldn't have to hurry. Yuju is not allowed to do any sports, which is why she always sits on a bench while the others do sports.
Yuju hummed a song to herself on her way. The main streets were already full, so Yuju always took a route through intimidating alleys to avoid people. Although the alleys were very dangerous, who would even want to approach this boring girl?
Upon arriving at school, she sat down at her place by the window. Her class was loud again, even they didn't notice it. Paper balls flew back and forth among the boys, while the girls sat watching the most popular boys and squealing the whole time.
Yuju closed her eyes and laid her head on the desk, hoping she could somehow fall asleep. The little sleep was wearing her down, and she wanted to somehow conquer her insomnia. But how?
Class began, and finally there was silence in the classroom. Yuju sat up and listened to the teacher. Although she was life-weary, she was very smart and could understand every new topic immediately.
"Kirai Yuju?" the teacher pulled Yuju out of her thoughts. Yuju looked at the board to come up with the solution."34% or more precisely 34.32%," she said, hoping no one heard her. No one was looking at her either.
"Good Yuju, take her as an example, Lee Heeseung," the teacher admired her.Yuju heard laughter not far from her."Take the invisible girl as an example haha," laughed the boy addressed without having looked at her beforehand. Or having noticed her.Yuju sighed and leaned against the window. Yes, her little and humble life.
