Aayra's pov:
The sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the empty room. Aayra sat by the window, her eyes fixed on the fading light, but her mind was miles away. Two months were over after that fateful day, when Karishma passed away...
" Kaha chali gayi tu Karu... hum sab ko chodke...? Tujhe ek baar bhi hum sab ki yaad nahi aayi na....! " Aayra whispered, her voice breaking the stillness. She clutched a photograph of them together, memories flooding back with a bittersweet intensity. The days they spent together now seemed like a cruel joke.... " Tu boli thi na humesha saath rahegi.... phir kyu chali gayi aise... "
Aayra's heart ached with a mix of anger and sorrow. Anger at the world for taking Karishma away so abruptly, and sorrow for the moments they would never share. She felt lost, adrift in a sea of grief, struggling to find a way forward without her best friend.
Aayra's tears blurred the edges of the photograph, but she didn't wipe them away - " Karu tujhe pata hai.... tere bina na ek khalipan mehsoos hota hai humesha ! I miss you yaara... Please vapas aa jaa naa... Tujhe pata hai Hasu di apna dhyaan nahi rakhti bilkul... Aa jaa na... Dekh na sab kuch badal gaya hai.... Sab kuch....! " she murmured. The silence of the room seemed to echo her words.
Days turned into nights, and Aayra found herself caught in a cycle of memories and longing. She replayed their conversations in her mind, clinging to the sound of Karishma's laughter and the warmth of her smile.
One evening, as she sat by the window, a gentle breeze carried the scent of jasmine into the room. It was Karishma's favorite flower. Aayra closed her eyes, letting the fragrance envelop her, it let her have the essence of her best friend's presence. " Tu aayi hai na... Mujhe pata tha tujhe aana hi padega...! "
Haseena's Pov:
The news of Karishma's death shattered had Haseena's world. The bond they shared was unbreakable, and losing her felt like losing a part of herself.
In the days following Karishma's passing, Haseena was engulfed in a whirlwind of emotions. The initial shock left her numb, unable to fully grasp the reality of her sister's absence. But, time doesn't wait for anyone. She moved through the days in a daze, performing tasks mechanically just like a robot according to her schedule while her mind struggled to process the loss. She started to work over time in the office, avoiding the apartment which carried Karishma's memories, as much she could.
Haseena found herself getting brim eyes at the smallest reminders of Karishma—her favorite song playing on the radio, the scent of her perfume lingering in the air, or a photograph of them together. The pain was overwhelming, and there were moments when Haseena felt like she couldn't breathe.
" Laut aa na baccha... Kabhi nhi daantege tujhe dekhna.... Humesha pyaar karenge....! " she said looking at their photo albums....
She was smiling looking at the cute smiling face of her baby sister, but it was short lasting. Anger soon followed. Haseena was angry at the world for taking Karishma away so abruptly, angry at herself for not being able to protect her, and angry at the circumstances that led to her sister's death.
" Kitni baar maana kiya tha tujhe k baccha dhyaan se chal lekin maddam ko sun'ni kaha hoti hai... "
In her quiet moments, Haseena found herself talking to Karishma, sharing her thoughts and feelings as if her sister were still there listening attentively. These conversations, though one-sided, provided a sense of connection and comfort that Haseena yearned for.
" Tujhe pata hai aaj office mei kya hua... "
One such day, Haseena remembered the fateful day. The moment she saw her sister for the last time.
Flashback:
Haseena stood frozen, the doctor's words echoing in her mind. " She is no more " It felt like the ground had been pulled from under her feet. Her vision blurred as tears welled up, and a wave of nausea washed over her as she collapsed on the floor with a thud!
" Nahi....! Yeh kaise ho sakta hai.... Karishma... Mera ba... baccha " she whispered, her voice shaky. The world around her seemed to fade into a distant hum, the sterile hospital walls closing in on her. Everything and everyone around her seemed meaningless to her.
The doctor stood by, his expression somber. " I'm truly sorry for your loss " he said gently. " We did everything we could "
Haseena nodded numbly, not trusting herself to speak. She felt a hollow ache in her chest, a pain so deep it was almost physical. The thought of never seeing Karishma's smile again, never hearing her laugh, was unbearable.
As they made their way to the room where Karishma's body lay, Haseena's mind raced with memories. The sterile smell of the hospital mixed with the overwhelming scent of antiseptic, making her stomach churn. She felt Nitasha's supportive presence beside her, but it did little to ease the suffocating grief that enveloped her.
As her eyes fell on Karishma, lying so still and peaceful, it felt like a cruel joke. Her sister now looked like she was merely sleeping. Haseena's legs felt weak, she took a deep breath, trying to gather the strength to move closer. " Shaant hone bola tha baccha... Itna bhi shaant nahi lekin...! " she whispered, maintaining her calm composure even in this condition.
Each step felt like a monumental effort, her feet heavy as her heart swelled with a flood of memories. She vividly recalled the first time she cradled baby Karishma in her arms, feeling an overwhelming rush of love and protectiveness. Every tiny milestone of Karishma's childhood played like a cherished movie reel in her mind—her first steps, the way her eyes sparkled with curiosity, and the sound of her innocent laughter. Haseena remembered the pride she felt watching Karishma walk into school for the first time, her little hand waving goodbye with a mix of excitement and nervousness. Each moment was a precious gem, etched deeply in Haseena's heart, making her realize how swiftly time had flown by.
When she finally reached Karishma's side, her hands trembled uncontrollably. She reached out, her fingers brushing against Karishma's cold, lifeless skin. The reality of her sister's death hit her like a tidal wave, and she felt her knees buckle. With a heavy heart, she leaned down and kissed Karishma's forehead. " I love you baccha... " she whispered.
Present:
Months passed, and Haseena knew she had to find a way to move forward. She decided to rent out a room, hoping it would bring some life back into the house. She placed an ad for a paying guest, and soon, a young woman responded.
The day the new tenant arrived, Haseena was overcome by an eerie sense of déjà vu. As she opened the door, her breath caught in her throat.
" B..baccha... " she mumbled, her voice trembling, before everything went black.
