It was the night of the Halloween dance and Jess had decided on wearing a 1920s flapper dress. It was short and black and had tassels all over it, she wore a thin headband and did makeup to match. She actually thought she looked quite good.
"Opinions" she asked her dad as she stepped out her room. He was currently doing Miguel's skeleton face paint but looks over to see her quickly.
"Yeah yeah looks good" he answers, she wasn't expecting much more than that. She sat on the couch as he finished Miguel's face paint.
"That looks sick" she said. She'd seen old pictures of her dad in that exact costume before, she couldn't pretend like it wasn't a good one.
Johnny drives them both to school since he wanted to put posters for Cobra Kai up to promote it. Once they are in the hall they head over to Demetri and Eli.
"Oh skeleton, classic" Demetri says to Miguel "and flapper girl?" He asks
"Of course" she replies
"I like your sorcerer costume" Miguel says to Demetri and his face was priceless
"It's a necromancer" Jess corrects "like your doctor costume" she says to Eli
"I'm a plastic surgeon, I fix lips" he responds and Jess just smiles and nods."your dress looks nice" he says
"Thanks, I just got the cheapest one I could and added a few stitches around the waist" Jess said
"When are we going to ask the dragon girls to dance?" Miguel asks
"Slow your roll, we got time" Demetri claims as we all watch Doctor Who pull one away
"Shit" Miguel says
Just as Jess was going to ask Eli to dance he says he has to go to the bathroom. Jess waits outside on a bench as they are in the bathroom, she looks on her phone and sees a video Yasmine posted of Aisha at the buffet table. Despite her never being friends with Aisha because she was friends with Sam, that didn't mean she didn't feel bad for the girl.
Kyler and his friends walk past Jess and go into the bathroom causing Jess to look up from her phone. It only took a few seconds before Eli and Demetri come running out
"Where is Miguel" she asked and Eli looked towards the door "get my dad, he will be around here somewhere" she said before heading inside to see them beating him up.
"Get off of him Kyler" she said grabbing his arm but he pushes his elbow back straight into her face making her fall back. She stands back up and managed to punch Kyler right in the face. "Get the fuck off him or my dad will be here to beat you up again!" She told Kyler
"Relax we were just playing" he replied
"Well I recommend you stop" she said through her teeth. At this point her dad walks in making Kyler and his friends scurry out the door leaving just them and Miguel, who was currently laying on the floor, inside.
Jess and Johnny carried Miguel home where his mom was not happy. Jess decided to just head to bed at that point while her dad went on the walk and came home drunk where he passed out on the floor.
The next day she went back into school where her Demetri, Miguel and Eli where all in the library during their free period.
"So no more karate?" Demetri asks
"Nope" both Miguel and Jess reply
"Well it's probably for the best, it was starting to boost your confidence"
"Isn't that a good thing" Jess says
"No" Demetri answers "what has confidence ever gotten anybody except for a black eye and their backpack thrown in the trash?"
"Well I thought it was kind of cool how you stood up to Kyler" Eli says smiling at Jess
"Are you insane!" Demetri asks "let me ask you, what is the best superpower to have"
"Super strength" Miguel answers confidently
"Wrong" Demetri responds "invisibility. A distant second would be super speed to run away fast"
"Run away from who?" Kyler interrupts with his friend Brucks and puts his hands on Eli and Jess's shoulders
"We were just leaving" Miguel states and Jess sighs packing her stuff up
"Hey where you going?" Kyler says with his hand on the back of Eli's neck "look at this freak"
"What kind of girl would every kiss this shit"
"Leave him alone Kyler" Jess interrupts
"Oh yeah. You" Kyler says pushing Eli away and looking at Jess "get out of here"
We leave and Demetri comes out a few seconds later with yogurt on his bag
"Could be worse I guess" Jess says
"Your bag isn't the one covered in yogurt" Demetri states
"True but at least that pretty face of yours is kept safe" she teases
