After their marriage, Joe and Katherine moved into a two-bedroom house located at the intersection of Jackson Street and 23rd Avenue. Joe, an ambitious boxer and guitarist for a blues band called the Falcons, soon realized the importance of providing for his family. He took on multiple roles, working as a welder and crane operator at U.S. Steel, sometimes juggling three jobs simultaneously. Meanwhile, Katherine, a devoted Jehovah's Witness and homemaker, nurtured her own musical ambitions as a singer and pianist aiming to become a country-western performer, while also working part-time at Sears and supporting her children's musical talents.
