Michael Joseph Jackson was born on August 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana. He was the eighth child in a large African-American family, known as the Jacksons, who resided in a modest two-bedroom house on Jackson Street.
Gary, a small town located 25 miles from downtown Chicago, is where Joseph Walter "Joe" Jackson settled at the age of 18 before meeting his future wife, Katherine Esther Jackson.
After their marriage, Joe and Katherine moved into a two-bedroom house located at the intersection of Jackson Street and 23rd Avenue. Joe, an ambitious boxer and guitarist for a blues band called the Falcons, soon realized the importance of providing for his family. He took on multiple roles, working as a welder and crane operator at U.S. Steel, sometimes juggling three jobs simultaneously. Meanwhile, Katherine, a devoted Jehovah's Witness and homemaker, nurtured her own musical ambitions as a singer and pianist aiming to become a country-western performer, while also working part-time at Sears and supporting her children's musical talents.
