On March 28, 2015, Mariah Roebuck picks up her phone, quite worried, to call the police. She feels that her friend of 12 years, Amanda Barbara Nichole Taylor, seems to be losing control lately, and she fears that Amanda might harm herself.

Amanda has had a hard time recently because she lost her husband, Rex Taylor, in August 2014. Following a period of depression, he committed suicide by hanging.

It is very likely that Rex, who had been struggling with a severe opioid addiction for a long time, saw his psychological state deteriorate to the point of taking his own life, largely due to the drugs. His addiction had, in fact, led the couple to separate shortly before this tragic event, in April 2014, which forced Rex to move back in with his father, Charles Taylor.
Rex and Amanda had been together since their senior year of high school, and they had two children together. So, it's not very surprising that she's struggling to cope with his death, even though they were separated when it happened.

On March 27, 2015, late in the evening, on their shared anniversary, Amanda went to Rex's grave and attempted to take her own life, which understandably frightened her loved ones greatly. This is why Mariah decided to call the police the next day to request that they take her friend to the hospital.
After being admitted to the Carillon Psychiatric Clinic in Christiansburg, a discussion took place between the medical team and the young woman. They told her that if she voluntarily accepted her admission, she could request to leave after a three-day stay. This would be followed by a three-day evaluation period to determine whether Amanda posed a danger to herself or others. If, after this evaluation, the medical team judged that she did not present a risk, she would be able to leave without any issues.
