In 1987, Michael finally unveiled a new album titled "Bad." It was highly anticipated to match the monumental success of "Thriller," and it did just that. One of Michael's popular tracks from the "Bad" album, "Smooth Criminal," despite reaching only 7th place on the charts, became beloved by fans worldwide.

Michael received the Award of Achievement at the AMAs for his best-selling album "Bad" becoming the first to top charts in 25 countries. The Bad World Tour lasted nearly a year and a half, featuring 14 sold-out shows in Japan and setting a new attendance record with 570,000 people. At Wembley Stadium, he attracted 504,000 attendees across seven sold-out shows, setting another Guinness World Record.

In 1988, Michael released his autobiography titled "Moonwalk." The book sold over 200,000 copies and reached the top of the New York Times bestseller list. Michael spoke about his childhood, his experiences with the Jackson 5, and addressed the abuse he endured from his father. He also mentioned the changes in his appearance, attributing them to factors such as three plastic surgeries, puberty, weight loss, adopting a strict vegetarian diet, altering his hairstyle, and even the effects of stage lighting.

In March 1988, Michael bought 2,700 acres (11 km²) of land near Santa Ynez, California.

Just to give you an idea, Central Park is approximately 843 acres. So, 2,700 acres is about 3.2 times the size of Central Park.

When Michael told the architect about his construction plans, Tony Urquidez was shocked: "He [Michael] wasn't the demanding type, but more of a little kid that wanted things immediately. We had crews working all hours of the day, and you could tell Michael was excited. He put pressure on me, but it was a different kind of pressure, a fun pressure. Michael gave me a mental visual of what he wanted, and I had the freedom to create."
