Kaworu waited at the entrance for Shinji, he emerged from the crowds of students, pushing his way through to meet with his beloved friend. The sky grew dim and surely it began to spit "It looks like it's about to rain." Kaworu said, holding out his palm, feeling the raindrops. "Don't worry i brought my umbrella today, we can share it." he continued, Shinji didn't respond.

They both huddled under the umbrella and began walking, the rain quickly turned savage, pummeling the umbrella with compelling force. They walked tightly packed together, afraid to get caught in the hail of bullets. "Kaworu." Shinji tried to talk over the loud bouncing rain "About what you said earlier, about understanding me. What did you mean?" he questioned

"I know you Shinji, we were fated to be together. I understand your thoughts and emotions, you're the only thing that makes sense to me on this planet."

Bullshit. This guy thinks he can spout out a load of philosophical shit to me and think that makes him able to understand me, he doesn't get a thing, he's a poser. Shinji mused

Shinji suddenly came to a halt, Kaworu looked back at him confused "Shinji?"

"How could you even say that you understand me, you don't even know me! Nobody can understand me or the things that go on in my head! He burst out

Kaworu is taken aback by Shinji's sudden outburst, he'd never thought he would see the timid boy act out so aggressively. But he knew Shinji more than he knew himself. "Shinji, our names are written together in the Book of life, we are 2 different souls yet so alike."

"You're not making any sense! stop spouting gibberish to me! you don't know me, you don't understand me Kaworu, and nobody does!" he began to tear up, and in a fit of rage he began to take off into the busy streets, blinded by his tears, and straight into the path of a moving car.

"SHINJI!"

Kaworu instinctively yanked him by his shirt and forced him back into safety; his warm tight embrace. Shinji tried to fight against him then gave up collapsing into the boy's arms, soaking his shoulder in hot salty tears. The umbrella had been cast aside and the 2 stood there in the battering rain, holding each other afraid to let the other go.

Shinji comes to his senses, and is overwhelmed with emotion. He feels shocked, embarrassed, resent and sorrow. "Im so sorry, I'm so stupid." he looked at Kaworu with puffy eyes.

"It's okay Shinji, your not stupid." Kaworu replied running a hand through the boy's drenched locks, he felt at ease, Kaworu was here. Everything was going to be alright.

The 2 had changed direction, they were now heading towards Kaworu's home. Shinji tried to decline the offer, afraid to be a burden but Kaworu insisted he'd stay for a while so he could calm down a bit. Shinji found it hard to refuse that gentle smile of his.

"We're here."Shinji looked around to see no house but an abandoned post office which had seen better days. "Come on." Kaworu grabbed his hand and pulled him inside. Shinji was mortified upon finding out this is what Kaworu called "home" The door was old and blistered, and an army of rubble and broken bricks surrounded the place. Inside there were lockers which once secured letters, had been ripped open, and had been repurposed into shelves holding shoes and unfolded scrumples of clothing. There was a single mattress in the corner of the room, which had suited an old yellowy hue from overtime, And in the middle was what appeared to be a small rusted metal fire case, just like it had been ripped out of an actual fireplace.

"Come, sit down." Kaworu patted the old stone floor

Shinji carefully planted himself down, trying to avoid any broken glass or bricks. Kaworu picked up a teapot from the rubble and began filling it up with a random mystery hose from behind the counter, he then proceeded light the fire with a match and put the teapot  inside the metal case. Shinji was speechless.

He watched in bewilderment as Kaworu later stuck his hand back into the fire, took out the ready teapot and plonked a teabag in there, his white hands were left unscathed, not even a tint of redness or anything. He casually began pouring the tea into 2 cups, shoving one towards Shinji.

"What's the face for?" Kaworu asked

"O-oh nothing." Shinji had been gawking widely at that display, he couldn't even comprehend what he had just seen. Kaworu ignored the shocked expression on his friend's face and began to ask "So Shinji, what was that all about earlier."

"It was nothing, i was being dramatic. I'm embarrassed about it honestly." he shrugged it off "I'm just a complicated guy i guess." he finished taking a reluctant sip from his tea, Kaworu watched him closely, Shinji felt like melting into the ground.

"But why?" Kaworu presses on, staring deeply into his navy blue eyes. Kaworu's smile was so alluring, that it made Shinji want to give in and spill out all his secrets. "I promise i won't judge you no matter what it is, from man to man Shinji."

"I've never really felt like i belong anywhere, from a young age I've always been alone. My mother died and my father soon after left me, and-" He hesitated, unable to get the words out

"No go on." his friend nodded, he took in a deep breath and gave in "I'm not supposed to tell you this but my father owns a company called Nerv, it's a special organisation to fight against the angels, those creatures that have been coming to the city and attacking us. He summoned me here because he needed my help to fight them, i hadn't spoken to him in years yet here i was. I only agreed in hopes of getting my father's approval, but it was futile, i was and never will be good enough. I was pissed because you said you understood me, but how could anyone understand the pain, all the things I've had to see!" He hadn't realised it but he was crying once again, Kaworu watched silently as the tears rolled down his face and dropped onto the cold stone floor.

Kaworu cautiously took his tea away from him, still mesmerised by the details of his crying face. "I think it's time to go to bed."

He took Shinjis's hand and guided him to the mattress where the 2 shared a single sleeping bag, their bodies tightly pressed together. Shinji was too riddled with emotion to be thinking of getting home, or the building he was in, practically ready to collapse on them, or how he could feel Kaworu's heart softly beating against his own. He was exhausted and shortly blacked out.

Kaworu watched as the boy's weak eyelids slowly lost to sleep, he sat up and watched the stars through a smashed window, all dazzling and sparkling in the dark hopeless void. He mournfully turned to look down at Shinji, and gently ran a hand through his chestnut mane.

"My dear Shinji, please forgive me."
