Enid woke up to an eerily quiet dorm. She rubbed her eyes and glanced around, her heart sinking when she realized she was alone. No Mama, no Mommy, and no Ma. The silence was unnerving, and her little side felt a pang of fear and sadness.
She sat up in bed, clutching Luna tightly against her chest. The room felt much larger and emptier without the comforting presence of her caregivers. She popped her pacifier into her mouth, hoping it would provide some solace.
The remnants of her wolf hormones were still buzzing inside her, making her feel uneasy and on edge. She hadn't wolfed out yet, but the anticipation and uncertainty were making her anxious. She felt the prickling sensation of her growing claws and teeth, a reminder that her transformation was looming.
Enid whimpered softly, feeling tears prick at the corners of her eyes. She wanted her Mama, or Yoko, or Davina—anyone to hold her and tell her everything was going to be okay. She tried to remember what they had taught her about staying calm and finding comfort in her little items, but it was hard without them there.
She crawled out of bed and padded over to the window, hoping to see some sign of them returning. The view outside was peaceful, but it did nothing to calm her racing heart. She sat on the floor, hugging her knees to her chest, feeling more alone than ever.
Minutes felt like hours, and Enid's fear continued to grow. She couldn't understand why they had left without telling her, and her mind started to conjure up all sorts of scary scenarios. Maybe something had happened to them? Maybe they wouldn't come back?
Just as she felt a sob rising in her throat, the door creaked open. Enid looked up, her eyes wide with hope.
"Eni, are you alright?" Wednesday's familiar voice broke through her fear. She rushed into the room, followed closely by Yoko and Davina.
Enid burst into tears, relief flooding through her. "Mama!" she cried, holding her arms out.
Wednesday hurried over and scooped Enid into her arms. "Shh, it's okay, little cub. We're here now," she soothed, gently rocking her back and forth. "We just stepped out for a moment. We would never leave you alone for long."
Yoko and Davina joined them, both looking equally concerned. "We're so sorry, Eni," Yoko said, kneeling down beside them. "We didn't mean to scare you."
Davina stroked Enid's hair, her touch calming. "You must have woken up right after we left. We should have left a note or something."
Enid clung to Wednesday, her sobs gradually subsiding. "I was so scared," she mumbled around her pacifier. "And my wolf hormones... they're still making me feel weird."
Wednesday kissed the top of Enid's head. "I know, little cub. We're here now, and we'll help you through it."
Yoko gently took one of Enid's hands, examining her claws. "Your transformation is getting closer. But remember, you're not alone in this. We'll help you every step of the way."
Davina nodded. "And if you ever feel scared or unsure, just let us know. We'll make sure you're taken care of."
Wednesday laid Enid back on the bed, tucking her under the covers. "How about we all stay here with you for a while? We can read a story or watch a movie, whatever makes you feel better."
Enid nodded, feeling a sense of security returning with their presence. "A story, please."
Wednesday smiled and reached for a book from the shelf, while Yoko and Davina settled on either side of Enid. As Wednesday began to read, Enid felt her fear and anxiety melting away. Surrounded by her loving caregivers, she knew she could face anything—even her impending transformation.
With the comforting sound of Wednesday's voice and the gentle touch of Yoko and Davina, Enid drifted back to sleep, feeling safe and loved. No matter what challenges lay ahead, she knew she had a family who would always be there for her.
